Butt joint done correctly will be just fine. You have some work going on there.....that transom are you replacing it??? Take some measurements and start cutting...Watch for Opps or Ondarvr and of course countless other. The most intiminating part is getting started.

I used that joint on my bilge bulkhead and butt joint elsewhere.....It's all good!

As far as the cut through the outer skin.... no biggie... grind it down to clean glass inside....duct tape outside...couple of strips of csm progressively wider 2" 4" etc. and your good....some faring and gelcoat on the outside later.

Thanks much TG/Rick, probaly will do as Rick did and the bilge bulkhead will get a cross halve joint with butt joints for the remainder. Got half of the transom out and I'm working the starboard half. Plan is to replace 100 percent of the lumber, lot's of rot. Appreciate you taking a look, I will get more pics posted as I progress

I havn't quit on this project, just been out of the loop with Easter and some work related travel. Got back on the boat this past weekend, got the transom completly out and ground down and stringers on the port side removed and ground. Sorry, didn't have the camera with me, but will be sure to get some new shots soon. As I have read and seen on many posts the dust created grinding is something to recon with, looked like a West Florida snow storm in there! Looking foward to putting some new lumber in, but will still be a bit before that happens. Had a moment or two of weakness and looked at some boats online, but with summer appproaching prices have gone up and didn't see any great values. Figured I got this far so I will press and have a great boat in the end, probaly not this summer however. More to follow soon.

Another four hours today on the end of the old grinder. Starting to get pretty hot here, miss those cool spring days. Posted some pictures, focus today was on the tansom and outboard stringers. Do have a question, if you look in the pictures you will see the engine area is painted with some off white stuff as well as the inside sides of the hull. I spent the majority of my time today trying to cut that back to bare fiberglass for the rebuild. At times I had 36 grit in the grinder and that stuff just laughed at it. An eight by eight square could take me up to 30 minutes to cut through. Not complaining, just wondering if it's gel coat or epoxy. Really worried when I have to cut it off the hull sides to tab in the deck. Any ideas?

Looks like gel or bilge coat...what kind of set up is on the grinder? A rubber backing disc with 24 grit should eat that up...a flapper disc....not so much.

It's a hard rubber backer with a 36 grit disc, not the best disc's maybe I should pick up some better quality pads. Thinking about picking up a 7" grinder also to cover more area.

Harbor freight has some cheap 7"ers think about 35 bucks
