Re: 1999 Johnson 115 coughs/sneezes and stalls when you give it gas

Just a thought here...(thinking of the great seahorse as I mention this..)
It might be an issue of pressure building in the VRO tank and pushing oil into the carbs as fuel evaporates....Take a paperclip, straighten one end, remove the oil tank cap, turn it over so you are looking directly at the under-side of the cap...In the center, you will see a small hole,..push the paperclip through until you feel it puncture the diaphram. This will eliminate pressure build-up, which "May" be causing your issue with extra oil in the carbs....

You said that the problem didn't go away when you used premix? Did you disconnect the VRO oil feed when you did this? If so how can the problem be the VRO?

Simple point but have you checked the timing?

I did disconnect the VRO oil feed when I tried the premix and ran it for what I thought would be long enough to get all the oil out of the VRO so that it was just using premix. However now that I think about it the no oil alarm should have gone off when this happened and it didn't. I suppose it is possible there was still a tiny bit of oil in the VRO. I will try again tomorrow and make sure. I will also try a new gas line and fresh gas in a separate smaller tank in case something is wrong with my gas although it was running fine up until the problem started on the same gas.

Do you have a timing light to verify your idle timing & timing advance? Just maybe the optical sensor is playing up.

The OIS system really reqires the OMC test equipment to properly time these...I've tried and tried without, and it can't be done correctly.

I know. I've made up a low cost analyzer to do this as a replacement for the OMC analyzer. Works well and I've got a few people interested in it. See my earlier post on "Low cost analyzer for setting OIS2000 timing". You can use a timing light to check the timing - even though light can interfere with the optical sensor. It's well enough shielded that I haven't had a problem in checking the timing - but of course doing this at WOT aint so easy. It could be that fishonceos problem is timing related.

Re: 1999 Johnson 115 coughs/sneezes and stalls when you give it gas

Good point you guys. Do you think the timing could have suddenly gotten out of wack? Checking the timing is at the top of my to do list. I should have checked it earlier but I didn't see how it could have gone bad in the hour or two between when the boat ran great and when I went to take it out the second time and the problem occured.

Any thoughts on the primer solenoid malfunctioning? I read somewhere that it can cause similar symptoms if it is stuck partially open or leaking?? It does seem to have an effect on the engine running when a push the key in. I hear a little click from the engine when I push the key in to start it too.

Also, any chance the powerpack is defective? I did a spark test at idle and had good 1/2" blue spark (hard to tell if it was erratic. Could that cause slightly excess smoke at idle, occasional sneezing and occasional bogging at higher rpm?

Thanks guys

fishonceo
I have a 98 115hp johnson with the same problems.
Have you figured out what the problem is?

Re: 1999 Johnson 115 coughs/sneezes and stalls when you give it gas

Problem solved? Not quite...

Much of problem or symptoms have bee remedied. The motor no longer smokes excessively, sneezes/coughs a puff of smoke and stalls (maybe once if at all). I checked timing today and it was good, I had a mechanic play around with the idle fuel adjustments and it seems to have helped. The only problem now is stalling if you accelerate right away after shifting. When you shift into gear it idles around 850-900 and starts moving but if you start giving it gas right away after shifting it will bog down and stall. It seems as if it is being loaded or lugged. BUT if you shift into gear when the engine is well warmed up and let the boat start moving pretty good for at least 10-15 seconds and then accelerate it does not bog or stall and runs great at the higher throttle range and WOT. Any ideas anyone? I might be losing a cylinder when I try to accelerate right away. It seems like this problem is constantly evolving, although getting better.

miket-
I would just read this entire post in detail and try some of the things I did. Replacing the VRO seemed to have helped the smoke problem and the sneeze and stall. Reving almost to WOT in neutral for a second or so (although probably not the best thing to do) may clear the engine out (blowing pooling oil/gas out?) and help the problem especially the smoking. Check the engine over really well, it is kinda a process of elimination. I'm still not 100% sure whether it is a fuel or ignition problem but most likely it is fuel. Keep checking back and post anything new you figure out.

I have had exactly the same problem as you now mention on my 2001 150. It seems a lot of people with later model carb motors have a similar problem. Whether it is related to the OIS ignition system, I'm not sure. It seems that adjusting the idle jets correctly (not too lean) makes a big difference.

Hey fish i having the same problem with mine when you give it too much throtle it bogs down but if you baby the throtle it kicks in and you can give it full throtle very frustrating isnt it ??

Re: 1999 Johnson 115 coughs/sneezes and stalls when you give it gas

I had the same issue with an OIS 175...Both the low and max timing were messed up, and with the right test equipment and the manual, I fixed the problem that had been an issue for nearly 6 months....sync of the timing system is CRITICAL to operation in the normal range...everyone kept saying it's fuel or Idle adjustment...The timing set-up of an OIS affects both low and high...if one is out of sync, so is the other.

I've recently set idle & WOT timing & done a link & sync on my motor but haven't had the time or weather to check on the water yet. Last thing will be to check idle jet mixture. I don't think the timing was previously set particularly well.

I had a problem similar to yours with a 1997 225 hp evinrude and found it to be the switch which cuts out three cyl initially when shifting into gear I disconnected the switch wire and it ran fine

Re: 1999 Johnson 115 coughs/sneezes and stalls when you give it gas

Just posted this on another thread. My 1999 150 was doing the same thing. Got worse after it was warm. Once I figured out the problem it took less than a minute to fix. The throttle linkage has a roller that advances the timing as you accelerate. Mine has a single phillips screw that controls the adjustment of when a roller starts advancing the timing. I had a gap between the roller and timing advance. I loosened the screw and made the adjustment forward so that the roller is touching the timing advance. Took care of the problem. It was VERY frustrating. Have been trying to figure out this problem for over a year.

I think the reason it was worse after it was warm is because of the quickstart that advances the timing when the engine is cold.

same on my 115 I checked the compression and had 40 on one so took apart and had scored a piston.

First of all, you guys are all GREAT. I have been reading these boards for some time and have learned so much already. I have a 1999 Johnson Oceanpro 115 HP. I just changed the water pump impeller, spark plugs (QL78YC) and lower unit oil. It ran great the first couple times I used it this weekend. But now it starts and idles fine but when you increase the throttle the engine starts to rev up slightly as it should and then "coughs" or "Sneezes" blows smoke and loses RPM's or stalls completely. You can shift into gear but it will stall as soon as you give it more gas. The engine has been well maintained. To fix this problem I cleaned the fuel filter (somewhat dirty), topped off with 5 gallons of fresh gas, swapped the old plugs (QL78YC)back in, did a compression test (all 4 cyls were 137 psi), inspected all wires and engine in general. When I took the new plugs out they seemed slightly wet with oil/gas. The engine seems to smoke a fair amount when idling even after running a few minutes. I tried a different fuel tank with premix and it seems to behave the same. I'm pretty mechanical but you guys are the REAL experts; any advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks

Had a similar problem....I and others kept looking for an electrical problem, but finally one smart old timer found a small crack in the water jacket gasket which allowed water into the cylinder when throttle was advanced. As the RPM began to increase so did the water pump pressure. Just a thought and may not be your problem.

i have a 1999 15 hp johnson and the motor seems to be loosing pressure in the gas line when i give it gas. i have changed the fuel line bulb and plan to try it out tomorrow. anybody have any ideas of what else it could be?
