If it is the carb motor, it will be a 60*V4 engine, with 4 carbs. It is an excellent design, a solid runner and quite dependable. I have the 1998 150HPV6 motor, which is simply 2 additional carbs, cylinders and coils.

Thanks everyone, great information, still waiting for the model number, but it seems like it will be J115PLEEM from correspondence and searching around.

we need the model # of the outboard.... its not enough to just say the year and HP?????

it might be a Ficht...

It is a J115VLSSS, wondering what "V" stands for, code says special gearcase, wondering what that means. ALso if there is no "P" in the code, does that mean no power trim, owners says it does.

Thanks,

Bill

I had a 2001 Johnson 50 hp that had a V in the model number...supposedly designating "special gearcase"... and that gear case disintergrated two times.....because it was cheap junk..............but you can look up the part number of any part and see what else it fits....to get an idea... how limited or broadly used it was

Just looking down through the parts, I don't think I can afford to have one crash once, never mind twice....

the 50 is a different gearcase than the motor you asked about of course!!! I dont actually know what a "special gearcase" is for a 2000 johnson....but the explaination for model # and the letters used in those #'s may...MAY not apply to motors as new as 2000....

that chart goes way back into the 80's.... and to tell you the truth...most of those special letters NEVER show up in parts lists for looking up your motors...like on the Evinrude.com site............
