1999 Johnson 130hp not wanting to stay running?

I've been busy trying to get my new(Used) boat into the water come this Sunday. Have already installed new bilge pump, live well pump and rewired them. Re-wired the electronics, GPS, Sonar and New Radio. Cleaned up the wiring under the console, What a mess it was! Installed new trailer lights and re-wired the trailer.

The only thing I got left to do is get the engine to stay run properly. I am using an external tank with pre-mixed to temporarily by-pass the fuel that was in the tank before, not sure it's age and wanted to eliminate that from my troubleshooting I am having to do now!

Tomorrow I will be starting off with a compression test, plugs look new, real clean looking. I did have a lot of oil in the float bowels originally, but since I've swithced over to the external tank that appears to have cleared up. I drained the fuel bowl and seen nice clean pre-mix fuel.

I was thinking of spraying the carbs with carb cleaner or adding something in the pre-mix gas can, any ideas on this?

Not sure if I need the tether installed, could this be the issue? Will trying attaching this tomorrow before the compression test to verify.

The engine does fire up, runs for a few seconds, perhaps 5-10 secs, than cuts off.

Any ideas would be welcomed!

Thanks.

Try pumping the fuel bulb to see if that keeps it running
Clean your sparks too,

Could it be so simple?

I have not connected the saftey lanyard to the key switch, could this be the reason?

Pumping fuel bulb will act as the fuel pump so if that fixes it you have a broken fuel pump.
If your safety lanyard is still hooked up to the kill switch then it wont run at all if its not connected

My safety lanyard looks much like this one.

more description on how the motor acts would help. smoke. does your choke work. are you choking before starting. are your plugs wet at all.
One trick to start a motor that hasn't run in a while is to push that little button on the shifter so you can throttle without the prop spinning and then have someone shoot some starter fluid in the carbs and blow her out works great with flooded situations. good luck. but to properly get your motor right you'll have to go through the carbs.

If the carbs are dirty, spraying them with a cleaner will not do anything to clean the internal parts, which is the dirty part. Running some sort of cleaner-fuel mix, may help if they are marginally dirty.

Are you using the choke button to start the motor? Can you advance the throttle a bit to give her a higher idle speed for warm up?

Well, with my head hung low, I must say I feel pretty dumb!

The whole time my engine problems was I didn't understand how the safety lanyard works. I just thought the lanyard pulled the key out to stop the engine.

I put on a new safety lanyard and after a few turn-overs the engine fired up ands stayed running, I shut it down after 5 minutes. Yea!

However, it does smoke quite a bit, but I thing that this has to do with I have the VRO still pumping oil into the fuel as well as a pre-mixed tank of gas I'm running during my troubleshooting process.

I replaced both thermostats, easy task!

Will be taking the boat out this Sunday, hope everything goes well.

Many thanks to all those that offered advice to this new boat owner.
