Hi

I have a 1999 Johnson 15 hp 2 stroke engine.

The Problem
I can select forward fine. Some times when I go from forward to neutral the engine remains in forward mode.
To get to neutral I have to select reverse (some times engine goes in to reverse)

I have removed the lower unit and I can't see how to adjust the lower shift rod. Rods do not look bent to me.

Any ideas?.

Thanks

James

If the problem started after removing and reinstalling l.u., might be that the shift rod connector isn't properly hooked up to the shift rod -- upper or lower, whichever you disconnected. The rod has to be fully inserted in the connector, then held in place by the screw or bolt. If remote control cables, could be the cable adjustment or assembly.

(with the l.u. off, should be able to shift in and out of gear by manually raising and lowering the shift rod.)

Thank you for the replies

The engine has always had this problem since I've owned it. I took the lower part off to try to resolve the issue.
I have had the lower part off a few times now and each time I made sure the two rods are connected properly so I'm now assuming I need to make some kind of adjustment.

@ Recerone - Do I just screw the rod in clock wise until it stops? I will give that a go this evening

Yep'' screw the rod all the way in until it stops, then back off to make the bend face forward. I had a older salty 15 E-rude do similar it turned out to be a badly worn shift cradle, the ear tabs were wore almost off.

There is no adjustment at the connecter,--But the notches on the rods must be lined up with the bolt holes in the connecter.----There is an adjustment feature on the side of the motor block.
