The last two times I had my boat out, I began having shifting problems. Time before last, when trying to shift into forward, it was clicking/grinding a little before it would engage in forward. This was at the dock. Once I got under way, I kept checking it and it was working fine, so I went on. The last time, it initially worked OK at the dock, but when I was out trying to get/stay on a spot, I was having a difficult time shifting it at all and the action had become very stiff. I would have to really rev it to get it into gear and it would slam, so I came back home. One cable is new this year (throttle) and the other came with the boat when I bought it three years ago. Disconnected at both ends, the older cable is actually smoother than the newer one. I oiled up the control box and put everything back together and it was still difficult to move. I did not realize I was suppose to have the engine running or be turning the prop when trying to shift the gears. Now, with the cables disconnected and trying to shift it manually with the engine running, the shifter will not move in either direction. The model number is J150PXEES. Did I screw it up? I would think if I had bent the shift rod it would at least work in one direction, but maybe not. I would love to be able to fix this without havein to drop the lower unit. I worked on my outboards when I was a teenager 30 years ago, but have not done it in a long time (cause I haven't had one). Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the long read.

Re: 1999 Johnson 150 will not shift

Good Morning
You could have a bent shift cable. They do not like being bent when installed.
When you had the control box apart did it shift ok with out the cable attached?? Have you disconnected the cables from the motor, and tried to shift it? If its hard I would look at the cables for being bent.
With the cables off at the motor, did you try and shift it there. If so was it hard to shift or easy?? If easy I would again look at the shift cable
If it shifts hard at the motor with the cables off you have some thing going on beside the shift cable,

Yes. I have the cables disconnected. I am trying to manually shift it and it wont budge, motor running or not. It was shifting fine yesterday, moving I mean. Now it just will not move.
Thanks

Hi Again
Have you drained the lower unit before your troubles began?
If you drained the lower unit which screws (plugs) did you take out?
The Drain/Fill plugs are for a straight screwdriver.
The phillips head screw holds the shift linkage in place.
If you have not drain the lower unit I would, looking for metal chips/flakes.
If you have metal chips in the oil it might be time to have a mechanic look at it. As most people do not the the correct shimming tools to set the gear in properly on the prop shaft.
Hope this helps you out

Pretty common problem to get corrosion on the shift shaft at the seal in the lower unit. Time to drop the lower unit.

Thanks for the replies. I will drop the lower unit today and see what's up. I was hoping someone was going to come up with something that was an easy fix. LOL. Thanks again. I'll post back what I find.

I dropped the lower unit and this is exactly what the problem was. So I just remove the corrosion/oxidation, replace the O-rings and reassemble? The shift cover looks a little pitted on the top and even some on the inside. Is this common too or should I replace the part?

Thanks

Re: 1999 Johnson 150 will not shift

I have the part in place and am ready to reassemble. Can someone tell me what to torque the bolts to for the shift rod cover and the bolts that hold the lower unit on? My Seloc manual is very inadequate with regards to torque values.

Thanks

Re: 1999 Johnson 150 will not shift

These figures are from my factory manual.
Shift rod cover. 60-84 inch pounds
Gearcase retaining screws.
3/8 inch screws. 26-28 foot pounds
7/16 inch screw. 45-50 foot pounds
Trim tab screw. 35-40 foot pounds
It would be a very good idea to put some BRP gasket sealing compound or equivalent on the screws when you install them.
