You didnt ever mention about your cranking rpms...what were they?? Symptoms you describe sound plug related, either undertorqued, wrong type, cracked, malfunctioning, etc... yet you say they are brand new and torqued to spec.

They are new and the cables are new too. They are torqued well and gapped at .035. I don't have a tach conneced during cranking since the motor is on a stand but I made sure i am using a good starter.

I must be missing something I just don't know what.

Finally!!!!

The fact that I was getting louder pops and more indication of life made me recheck everything and give it another go. I double checked all connections, retorqued everything and did my start up procedure. After like two tries it fired up - it mas running rough but it went.

After tweaking it a little I got a good idle and smooth acceleration. I am pleased. I did notice that the engine smoked incredibly at first and then it went away with some black gunk coming out of the exhaust. My guess is that it had been stored with a decarb agent or something and it burned it off.

Thanks to everyone for the posts.
