I bought this motor new in 2001. It has always started and ran fine, but after an hour or so trolling it idles poorly and makes trolling almost impossible untill it gets new plugs. I do use Omc cleaner in the gas about twice a year and I always use fresh gas. I have been using champion QL78YC. I have had other omc's do this mainly smaller ones 15-25's and I have put in NGK's and this issue is resolved. It this OK to do with this motor? And what plug does NGK have for this?

Re: 1999 johnson 40 2cyl.

Same situation with me down here in Texas. Lots of trolling on a big lake, running a '99 Johnson 50 with VRO2. Top plug comes out a shade oily, so I'm trying out an NGK BR6HS, which should be a little hotter than the QL78YC Champs. It's the closest plug chart swap for the recommended Champion QL82C, which seems to be unavailable to me for some reason. No problems that I can see so far, but then the season's not over, is it?
