Hi guys,

I got this boat/outboard from a outboard mechanic. I thought there was water in the cylinders so I made him change the head gasket. It worked fine but It still seemed like there was a little bit of water getting in the cylinders and not enough power. So I thought it could be from the exhaust gaskets. 2 weeks ago while I was on the water it started acting wierd. I got home and noticed lots of water getting in the top cylinder. I figured it was the exhaust gaskets so I replaced them but I still got the same problem. The bottom cylinder is water free and works great. I checked the head bolts and noticed one was very loose. So I read up and noticed that we had to re-torque the head after first use.. but my mechanic never did.

I tried re-torquing with 10lb pressure but it wouldn't click, not sure if my torque wrench is bad or its too loose.

If exhaust gaskets were bad will water get in both cylinders?
Could this be head gasket issue?
Thanks

From your description it sounds to me as if the head gasket is your problem.Especially since you noted that one of the bolts was loose. My recommendation is to remove the head cover and replace the gasket following a thorough inspection and surface check of both mating surfaces for any high/low spots.Once complete make sure that the head cover bolts are re-torqued after the specified run-in period.Always tighten each head bolt in the proper crossover method sequence and use at least three lighter torque values until the final specified one is achieved. This will insure a proper iron out and full contact of gasket and mating surfaces. You'll also want to make sure that the loose bolt you mentioned and any others threads aren't stripped out, which could have been why it seemed loose to begin with.
