Hey guys, I finally got to work on my deck and stringer resto on 1999 marada. I finally got the cap off but not without a fight, the part where cap meets transom was such a b**** I had to cut part of the cap. I will begin cutting out the deck hopefully tomorrow or next weekend but I have a few questions. Do I start cutting from the inside out till I reach the edge of the plywood? Or Do I cut flush to the side of the hull. I'm asking because 8" from the hull it looks like that's where the deck starts, is that possible or could it just be the way they tabbed the deck to the hull. Thanks

This is your Cut line. I'd recommend using a circular saw set to the depth of the thickness of the deck material.and use the narrow size to go around the edge.

Yeah, Wood is showing you where the deck meets the hull. Your circular saw will probably get to within 1"-1.5" of there. That will leave you with enough old deck to figure out how high the new stringers/bulkheads need to be. After you get everything glassed in and cut to height below deck you'll cut the lip off before you put the new deck in. Most important thing is to just make sure the depth is set right so you don't hit the hull. Hope that makes sense. If I'm telling you wrong Wood will set me straight.

Hey guys, just got through taking off the deck and cleaning out the foam. I'm now at the stage of " what the heck did I get myself into" 😱 water destroyed all the stringers and deck. Water is just sitting in the hull for who knows how long, is it possible for water to damage the fibreglass hull as we'll if so what remedies are there. Also not sure of the exact name but am I grinding down to the drain which runs the length of the boat? Thanks

If by Drain, you mean the Keel, then yes you remove it all. Water can eventually ruin and delaminate fiberglass but I seriously doubt a boat of your vintage has these issues. If you have areas that you feel are problems, post some pics so we can see what you see.

Most of us are usually in denial about what lurks below but you see standing water and wonder what it could have messed up. Like Wood said, highly unlikely so breath a sigh of relief. BTW, don't let the EPA see that!

Almost forgot, you are just copying the img link in photobucket and directly pasting it into you posts (not using upload from URL) aren't you?

I was just referring to the toxic waste area he has there with all of the standing water. Not sure with a smart phone but basically, it looks like you are using photobucket, don't use upload from URL, just copy the IMG link in PB and then just paste directly into your text. I apologize if I'm not understanding how you are adding photos correctly.

hey guys, i have a few questions in regards to grinding. do i need to have a completely smooth surface or is it just to have a clean surface. i am referring to the old tabbing of the stringers, there seems to crevices (3"-4") that would require a large amount of grinding before getting down to the hull. also there were air bubbles from the previous glassing (second pic) do those have to be ground down or can i fill it with some PB. thanks

You want a well bonded clean surface. If what you glass to is not well adhered you will have problems. If you find areas with a jungle of bubbles, laminations separating or dry glass it needs to go. I don't see any 3"-4" crevices. Can we see a close up?
