1999 Mariner 50hp 4 stroke - can't get my spark plugs out

What's with the plugs on this engine? 5/8 is definitely too small and an 11/16 does not fit in the recessed spark plug well. Any advice on what tool to use?

most spark plugs are either a 5/8" or 13/16"

After trying 3/8, 11/16, 3/4, 13/16, the only socket I could get to fit is an 3/8 inch drive, 18mm.
