Just remember, this is a forum...and most people log on here to ask about a problem. Mercury has been around decades longer than Yamaha so there are ALOT more Mercs out there than Yamahas. With any of these forums, if you type in a specific engine, you will nothing but problem posts about them. Merc used the same motor for 20 some odd years with no changes so there are going to natuarally be alot of problems posts because there are so many out there. Now with that being said, look at how may people own the motor to the people with problems and well, theres millions more running than sitting in a junk yard, just call around and try to find a bad one. I have two of these motors, a 98' and a 89' and both are GREAT!!!!!. Been through a Nissan, 3 Evinrudes, and a Yamaha....and the Merc 25's are the only ones I have left, and still going. Bullet proof motor....buy it, service it, keep it serviced, install a water fuel separator, and run the heck out of it. And it will outrun a Yamaha anyday.
