You will need to find out if the alternator is a Mando or Delco.

Mando = 57-861049A1 BELT, Serpentine (Closed Cooling) $133.25 $120.13
Delco = 57-8638763 BELT, Serpentine, Closed Cooling (Alpha/Bravo) (With Power Steering) $101.91 $94.20

Also if the alternator is the Delco then the belt is available right here on iboats.;):)
8638763

Note that the bulletin serial number range posted above is higher then your serial number.

Re: 1999 merc 5..oL serpentine belt info

the reason for this is, last season the original belt jump off the pulley while cruising, it got torn up so we went to the auto part store and match one up. it seems a tad too long bec the tensioner adjustment is max out but was running fine. now the idler pulle with the smooth side bearing is shot it just squeaking . i perchase a new idler pulley but as the engine start runs the belt jump off the power stering pulley, i replace the old idler pulley and the belt does not slip off . stress . your thought guy.

Then you'll need to know if you have a plastic 4-3/4 in. power steering pulley or a metal 5-3/4 in. pulley along with what alternator.

These bulletins don't necessarily pertain to your exact engine model but are close enough to help give you some ideas of what may be wrong and a way to fix the problem.

Also I do believe there was a very small size change on the smooth idler pulley as the part number did change. On the old part old number (865598) the diameter measurement may have been 3 inch while the new part number (8M6500024) may be 3 1/8 ". If so and your already near max, the size difference may not help the situation.

Also keep in mind that engine bracket placement/spacing plays a big part of aligning pulleys. If a bracket was once removed say the (sea water pump for example) and was reinstalled with a washer out of place (behind the bracket) then that may through off the alignment.

Save for future reference.
