I have a 1999 Crownline 266CCR with a 7.4 Mercruiser MPI. I was having starting issues last year - clicking noise when key turned - but it would eventually turn over. I figured I would replace the starter slave solenoid prior to launching as it is an easy job. I now have no power to any gauges or ignition - so much for preventative maintenance.

The batteries are fully charged and terminals are clean. The battery connections are also clean.

Can anyone help in getting me started to diagnose this problem. Keep in mind I am a complete novice.

I tried the main engine braker - red button below slave solenoid - should it click into place. I pushed hard but couldnt get it to click??

Thanks for any advice.

Great link Don. This should help get me in the right direction.

Dingdong, the batteries are 12V 550 amp. They have always worked in the past with no problem. They are only 1 yr old and are fully charged.

Thanks for the help.

Re: 1999 Mercruiser won't start.

Don, went through the diagnostic tests from your link. Thought I had it at the ignition circuit braker - replaced that and the starter switch (picked it up when getting the braker just in case). Still nothing at the dash - no gauges, nothing. Went back to the engine and checked the newly installed slave soleniod. With the light tester light came on at terminal C and at terminal A. when I grounded to terminal A and put probe to terminal D - nothing. checked the main harness and it looked ok??

My question is I'm getting nothing at the dash - no gauges when the key turned. I am getting light with the tester on the braker and starter switch at ignition and start. Would a bad neutral safety switch kill all my gauges? Also any info on testing neutral safety switch?

thanks for any advice.
