Was running fine all day, about 4 hours. Then just died. Will start but dies when I engage in Forward. Boat is a 22 ft CC, 20 years old but new to us just 3 weeks ago. Previously owner was original buyer and maintained at the same marine shop over the years. Plan to take to this local shop but would be helpful to know what to keep and eye out for. We had ran over a small fishing line yesterday shortly before the motor failed - took off the prop today and and shaft was clear of fishing line.

Had a similar issue yesterday. Be sure all your cylinders are firing, that's a good starting point. You could have a dead cylinder and it will seem to run fine at idle, but at load it stalls.

sounds like fuel starvation, can you squeeze the bulb and get it going? Could be all of a sudden something got sucked in thru the fuel line or ethanol caused fuel hose itself to deteriorate creating "clots"

Both these options sound reasonable. Will keep you posted once the mechanic is able to take a look - bad time of year to break down...
