1999 Mercury 200 EFI with fast beep, beep, beep

Hello,

I have a 1999 Mercury 200 EFI that I am having trouble with. I ran it for the first time this year last night and it ran fine for about 5 minutes. After that, it lost power and went to idle. I was running around 4000 rpm on plane at that time. After idling around with no alarms, I got back up on plane and it ran for about 2 or 3 minutes and then died. Still no alarms. When I tried to restart it, it wouldn't crank and I was getting a fast beep, beep, beep.

Now, if I start to crank it and then turn off the key, I get the fast beep, beep, beep. I haven't let it start in case it's an oil issue.

I've verified the oil tank sensor is working correctly by disconnecting it and verifying continuity when the float goes to the bottom of it's travel. Continuity goes away when it floats up, indicating a full tank. Also verified both remote tank and onboard tank are full of oil.

How do I check the oil pump on the engine to rule it out? Any other thoughts?

Thanks,
Kurt

Other thing might be it thinking it’s overheating. Either actually or the sensor thinking it ?

oiler related. not overheat.. nothing on that motor that will reduce speed/rpm if something isn't right.. you need ta do a comp test for sure............

Thank you for the help. I'm going to do a comp test this week. I'm also going to do a test on the voltages coming from the stator and out of the packs to the plugs. Local Mercury tech thought it could be a bad pack (not sure the correct terminology)

Checked input and output voltages for both inner and outer switch boxes tonight. Here were my findings:

OUTER
Red around 70
Blue 206

INNER
Red 65-70
Blue 206

Green
1 was 135
3 was 148
5 was 152
2 was 149
4 was 149
6 was 146

Everything looks to be in spec according to the expected values that the mechanic gave except 1 was low. He said 150-160.

Also ran a compression test after running engine on hose for 5 minutes to warm up:
1 was 90
3 was 100
5 was 96
2 was 92
4 was 97
6 was 97

Those all seem to be okay. 1 is a little low but still within spec I believe. I think 90-100 is normal range.

I did notice some leakage coming from the water outlet on the top of the cylinder bank on the right. Looks almost a rust color. Is this indicating a head gasket leak?

Also, noticed my cranking battery was way low. I charged it with my regular (not onboard) charger and my motor fired right up. It's 6 years old, could this cause this kind of issue??? Motor was smoking from exhaust and I could smell oil. I also didn't get any alerts except if I cranked but didn't start and left key on. Then I would get the beep, beep, beep indicating oil issue. No alarms while running so I think this was a false alarm on the oil issue.

This is 100% normal as the module is not seeing rotation of oil pump shaft...

you need ta check comp with a different gauge.. they need ta be 115 or better with a known accurate gauge... every one of those are low...

Replaced the cranking battery. The original when tested was only providing around 300 CCA. With new battery, ran boat around lake for about 20 minutes with no issues. Seems to have fixed the issue so far.

For the compression, I had trouble trying to find the original specs. I did see that they should all be within 10 PSI. This motor is 21 years old so I'm sure it has lost some compression from original. If it gives me trouble again, I'll do another compression check.

that's 'bout as close as ya gonna get from mercury.. they don't give any definite comp numbers for any of they're V6's in tha manuals........ but if your numbers are right its low jus from lotsa years experience with 'em.... have seen "brand new motors" (mostly hi perf. stuff) range from 140 ta 120 right outta tha box over tha years... will run jus fine but will be a little lackin' in power when a load is added...........
