1999 Mercury 50hp Wont go fast???

1999 Mercury 50 hp trolls great but wont go above 5 MPH. I have changed pluggs and every time I pull the pluggs out they are soaked in gas. I live in Denver, Co. which is 5280 feet above sea level, but I fish up around 8000 feet. I was told when I baught the boat I was told it would automatical adjust for altitude. Is this true? Does it sound like I am having a adjustment proble. It was running great, but last 2 times I took it out I had this problem.

EFish, Does your motor run O.K. at 5,000 feet like at Chatfield or Cherry Creek? If so, you might need to go to a smaller prop at higher altitude. I had this problem with an older 25 h.p. engine at Granby, it would barely run up there. I live in Denver to and have found the altitude does funny things to our engines. Good luck. fishinlooney

Only the fuel injected engines will adjust for altitude.

Has it ever run right at this altitude. While the altitude has an effect you may also have other problems. If possible test it at a lower altitude. Check to see if its only running on 1 cylinder.

Thanks for all your replys...<br />Yes it has ran good at the high altitudes before. Every once and a while it would start bogging down after trolling for a while but all I had to do was give it some throttle and it would work it self out and start running good again. Now it just continues to bogg down and wont get up to speed.

May be time for a carb cleaning, and float check.
