Hey guys, I have a 1999 200 hp Mercury. I recently had a mechanic do a rebuild on it and am just wondering what is a fair price for this type of work? Obviously I have already paid and everything and am currently breaking the motor in again. I will post again later today with a list of what the mechanic did, new parts, etc. I am just looking for an overall opinion on what a total rebuild of this motor would cost? I know prices vary, but I paid a lot and want to make sure I got a fair deal.

Re: 1999 Mercury rebuild

It really depends on what all he had to replace. You're asking a VERY broad question.
Some parts are very pricey like a crankshaft or block. One of those alone could run over $1000.

I'm guessing if you had the work preformed by reputable mechanic on that new of an engine you would be looking at $2500?

If it's a hack job by a back yard shadetree somewhere around $1000

Maybe $1500 if he didn't have to replace many parts.

Just a guess though......
Did he use OEM parts or Aftermarket? What is the rate of labor per hour in you're area?

Re: 1999 Mercury rebuild

Here is a list of what was done:

Machine bore #2 cylinder - $50
Resleve #6 cylinder - $300
Machine head Port - $50

Parts:

Mercury standard piston - $102
Mercury .015 over piston - $102
Power head gasket - $92
Mercury Ring set (4) - $120
Piston/rod bearings (6) - $150
Cable ties - $5

Also replaced the water pump and removed oil reservior, so now I mix the oil.

Total was $2670 with tax

Does this seem like a good deal?
