1999 Nissan NS5B sitting for years...runs then dies

Just got a Portabote with 99 Nissan NS5B that hasn't been used in years and only had about 30-40 hrs on it. It looks new. Was run dry then the spark plug removed and a little 2 cycle oil put in. Everything under the cover looks brand new. There are small dabs of grease on any moving parts.

The motor starts in 3-4 pulls and seems to run fine at first. After a few minutes putting around at half throttle...it bogs and dies. Taking it out of gear doesn't stop it from dying. This is my first outboard, so I don't really know where to start. My guess is a fuel/carb issue. It seems to run perfectly for a few minutes..then bogs and dies. If I let it sit for a few and try again, it will run again for a few minutes. Once it dies, it typically won't run until I let it sit for a bit. I'm running 32:1 ratio of two cycle oil with new super unleaded vs the 50:1 in the manual, since it has been sitting.

Any suggestions or links to carb diagram would be greatly appreciated for this outboard newbie :). Fire away with questions if I haven't provided enough info.

That model is pretty indestructible. You may have a fuel flow problem. Are you running an external tank, or the integral tank? You can get a parts catalog and a factory service manual from any dealer, including me. Time to go through diagnostice, paying particular attention to the fuel system. Maybe clean the carb (including the integral fuel pump), and replace the filter. If using an external tank, it might have a leaky o-ring or seal along the way, or a blockage, restricting fuel.

I'm using the internal tank. What about overheating from a dried out impeller? Would it behave this same way? Are the impellers easily accessible on these units? How much for both the service and parts manuals?

If you think carb is completely unobstructed, check gas pump diaphragms condition, if ballonned, severly dried, or with craks replace, remove gas tank and clean thoroughly, remove lower fuel ****, inside will find a small linear mesh filter, clean well, reassemble and test. Time for a proper water pump check and new fresh plugs for that 13 year oldie. Run 50:1 and check if runs ok.

I don't have a service manual yet. Are there any online versions, tutorials or exploded diagrams for removing carbs, gas pump diaphragms, water pump etc?

Some of these are good suggestions for general maintenance issues for a motor that has been sitting, but I'm wanting to focus first on the symptoms at hand.

yep, water pump replacement ASAP. check the fuel lines, they might be old, replace them. check fuel pump, filter, and then go to the carb...................

clean the internal tank, use a external, if you can find one handy ..........

and get together with paul in the the service manual, tons of great stuff in there.............

There is also the possibility that you have an electronic component that is failing when warm, then working OK when cool. If so, there are no shortcuts. The ohm meter tests and DVA checks can help you determine the health of the ignition system. You can drop me an email at the office: paul@obersheimersails.com and I can help you with a service manual. Tohatsu service manuals are copyrighted, so are not available online.
