Hello all, I just bought a 1999 Regal 2150 LSC with a Volvo Penta 5.0GL from a local guy that kinda of took good care of it but it needs some work/parts.

The butterfly flap broke off and poked holes in the Y pipe causing the boat to take on water while in the water (vs while in the yard on flushing muffs). JB weld could fix this right? I would much rather do that then replace the Y pipe and yank the motor out.

Also, since the butterfly flap broke off and shot down the exhaust pipe, what do I do about replacing the flap? This flap/shutter is in the exhaust riser elbow or in the Y pipe? Do I order new headers or whatever that rusted thing is called (see pic below). I have no idea how long it has been like this (years perhaps?) so I would hate to ruin the motor due to negligence.

I tried getting the other side off but the rubber tube connecting the header to the straight pipe has a steel radial on it and I can't pry or cut it off. I'm concerned it's in the same bad shape and I wonder if damage has been caused to the internal components of the engine. Any ideas on where to start here?!

-New trim sensor on out drive as gague in dash does not show trim level
-New gas gague for console
-New depth finder
-Starter makes not so good grinding noise. Was removed and replaced with washers to assist in getting the distance right.

Someone said to "look at bellows and make sure they have all been changed. I would inspect the manifolds and risers also." but I don't know where those parts are as I'm very new to boating.

I wish it had an extended swim platform, do they make one specifically for the 2150? I would also like to replace the switches up at the console along with the wood grain panels that are showing their age.

Sorry for all the newbie questions but I really want to keep this boat and would like to know how to attack all it's problems smartly and not get taken advantage of at the boat shop.

Thanks,

Ray

Re: 1999 Regal 2150LSC exhaust/gagues/sensor issues

First, welcome to iboats.
You have a lot of serious problem at first glance. Before we get into what all you need, I would suggest you go up to the adults only or DIY sticky at the top of this forum and go to the Volvo information, download the OEM manuals for your engine and drive, then once you have a chance to look at them and learn the names of things we can get started on all the stuff you need.
You do need exhaust manifolds and risers, get those washers out from between the starter and block or you will destroy yor block. There are proper shims for that so the starter is properly shimmed. The Y pipe should be welded or replaced, those big holes are right where the clamps need to go, and you don't need JB weld falling out when due to heat, vibratioin, and water.

Boat problems such depth sounders and swim steps are taken care of in the electronics/electrical forum, and boat topics (not engines) forums.
This forum is where we can help you with your engine and drive.

Ayuh,... As usual, Don is dead On...
You've got Way Bigger Problems than discolored dash wood...

By the looks of Things,... I'd guess your electrical problems are Corrosion caused...

Water in the oil pan, busted PS pump, rusted manifolds/risers and possible cracked block.

Ordering a set of $800+tax manifolds and after a complete drain/refill he's going to run her on the hose (engine is out and on a pallet) to see if water returns into the oil pan.

Praying for no cracks but just in case, whats the best process to replace with a new or used engine or rebuild the current one?

Not sure why your mechanic didn't do a pressure check of the cooling system before installing the manifolds. Would have told you a lot more about the engine than running it on the floor. Many time on muffs, or any hose, there isn't the full flow of water or the load an heat on the engine that it will get while on the water. Good luck and hope it doesn't get more water in there, but I'm not seeing any reason to be hopeful.

Good call about pressure check. It needed new manifolds anyway so after they arrive and get installed I'm sure he'll do the pressure and compression checks, I'll mention it.

The question still remains, what should I do if the block is cracked? If I need to replace the block, I need to know how much replacements parts are going to cost and I would really like to know what the mechanic is talking about when we sit down and discuss, that also means knowing a BS price when I hear one.

What's a suitable replacement engine for my regal?
