1999 Regal advice

I'm looking into buying my first boat. Not looking for something new, just something that runs good. I came across a 1999 Regal on craigslist and it looks good and I plan on going to go see it some time this week. And my question is, it has carpet in it and I was wondering is that good or bad? please reply with anything helpful.

Most seasoned boaters do not like carpet unless it snaps in and out over a molded fiberglass floor. I have three boats with carpet over plywood and the floors have held up. I'm in a relatively dry climate though.

Which model Regal? Some of those in '99 probably had a molded floor (sole).

Since im new to the forums im not sure if its ok or not to post links. but there it is. 1999 Regal LSR 1700. It would be my first boat so im not looking to spend much. With our lake house being built currently it is time to buy a boat. And the only other thing i have owned was a jetski. oh and im in South Carolina

More important than the carpet is to make sure you are getting a well maintained boat. There are several great lists on this website that you can find by using ther search feature.

Yes, welcome aboard!! Looks like a wood floor to me, so I would be concerned about soft spots. Unless you are prepared for a HUGE project, a soft floor is one thing you must avoid!! Could be good though, but I would put weight on every square inch of that floor before I dragged it home.

I'd just check the deck and transom really well for rot. I don't see a garage in that picture or a cover on the ground in the background, so that makes me wonder. Oh, and greetings from another S.C. member.

im going to go look at it tomorrow if I can. And I will be sure to check and make sure there are no soft spots.

I have been searching on craigslist for a few weeks and im not looking to spend much. Since it would be my 1st boat im just looking for something to start out with.

Is there anything yall can tell me about the Regal boats? Are they a good company?

With a used boat quality of care and maintenance is more important than brand. Regal is a good boat, but I'd rather have a well cared for Bayliner than a trashed Regal. All use the same power plants and many of the same components. Quality differences are mostly in hardware levels and in some construction techniques. Most of the differences are where you can't see, but many don't matter a whole lot either. Exposed screw tips are an example, but if you can't get your hand back there what difference does it really make anyway?

If it floats, the floor and transom are sound and all of the stuff works you're most of the way home.

That's a nice boat. I like Regals and have owned two.

That said, in the size/price range, you would be much better off in the long run if you get an outboard powered boat with a fiberglass cockpit sole. They are vastly simpler and cheaper to maintain and you'll never have to worry about wet carpet and rotted sole.

Four Winns made a boat called the Horizon 170 that could be had with an I/O like that Regal, or a 90HP to 115HP Johnson outboard. A similar vintage Horizon 170 with an outboard can be found for the same kind of price as that Regal.

I'm biased because i own one. but i love my boat and i believe its made very well. from what i read here and elsewhere, Regal makes a quality product.

How do you plan on using the boat? Just a few people on board? Alot of people? Wakeboarding, tubing?

If you are going to basically a have it to cruise around in with a few people the 3.0 engine will be fine. But if you plan on loading it up and pulling a wakeboard, tube or slalom, you're probably going to wish you had at least a 4.3L V6.

Right model, wrong power... An outboard would be best.

I just purchased a new boat, but I am selling a 97 Horizon RX 185. The Four Winns is one heck of a well made boat. There are no cutting corners in the manufacturing of this machine. Having had it for 8 years and no problems I for one can say it is a heck of a boat. A very satisfied owner! Of course I overpowered it just a bit, 200HP Johnson, but man does it work... Yes I use it to...

went to go see it and it is fiberglass under the carpet. so thats good. it looks even better in person than in the pictures.
