1999 Yukon - $1,000 to Paint Top & Hood???

The paint on my wife's Yukon is crazing rather badly (see pictures below). I got an estimate today for $1,000.00from a body shop to paint just the top and the hood. I have never done any painting on a car myself so do not know what is involved. I have to believe that I should be able to do a "fair" job myself for a bunch less than $1,000.00. I do have a compressor and a cheapo-paint gun. I am not looking for a "show quality" job but at least to protect the metal and be presentable.

What tips do you have for the do-it-yourselfer and/or can you reference a web site that is something like "Do-It-Yourself Car Painting for Idiots"?

Here is what I'm dealing with:

The money is not in the paint, its in the prep. Thats where all the work is.
Do the prep and take it to macco to have it shot.
Unless you have a paint booth.
If you get caught painting it outside thats a huge fine, and in some places you can do jail time too.

My 99 Tahoe has the same, not as severe but close.
I got hit in the door a couple years ago and asked how much more to paint the hood and roof.
They wanted the same $$ I think. Said they would strip the paint off down to naked steel.

Although there might be $250-$300 in paint and supplies the rest is prep.
And paying for the facilities, tools, permits, filters, etc. So you need to figure in all the other tools and chemicals you dont already have. Then you have to do it on a dry day, no wind, after it has frosted hard, (in Miami?) luke warm day, etc. etc. to get the best results.
That $1000 does not sound so high then.

I never heard of anyone getting fined for painting their own.
I never seen anyone doing it in their front yard either.
Or advertising the event to the neighborhood.

GM paint is famous for doing that, especially the whites and metallics. And yes it needs to come off to bare metal. If you've got enough of a compressor to run a DA sander to get it off, start there and then prime/block sand/seal/block sand and take it to Maaco for the squirt. Should cost at least half as much. Your local auto body supply can hook you up with easy to use materials for the DIY'r.

Although I am not a body man, I have tackled most of the body work on our utility trucks. I will tell you one thing I learned, if you knock off the sheen with about 320 grit with an orbital sander, and reapply primer to the places were you went through the primer (yes remove surface rust as well) tape and cover anything you do not want to get paint on, use a product called emron, it is the same thing they use on the big trucks because it is so hard.

my .02 cents anyways
