so- I picked up an older[1980?] vintage 6 hp evinrude from a dealer-he pointed out that the engine , while an older model, appeard to be little used with no signs of abuse or neglect. It starts first pull, sounds smooth enough. He showed me newer models that didn't look nearly as good-saying that the age alone was not as important than how it was used.Makes sense to me.I have a 60 day written warrenty.
Now for the acid test- trying it out on my canoe.Looks like I should keep some weight in the bow.

Sounds like the guy was being up front with
you. Be sure to check for good water circulation
as if a motor sits too long the impeller will
need to be replaced.

Have fun

Link

He pointed out the importance of looking for a good volume of the water from the pump, and said to check the lube in the lower unit every now and again.Thr lower skeg has no damage, and the prop has no dings[ although I realise that could have been replaced-I think I should take a spare prop along in any case]
What would be considered to be a basic''emergency kit''to take along with me [tools etc]apart from spare plugs?
Also- what about those ''shoes'' that fit on the skeg for river running- are they of any value?

well I put the motor on the canoe and tried it out on the lake- ran beautifully. The motor smoked a bit starting up but as soon as it warmed up the smoke disappeared.I had about a 650 lb load and it moved right along. There were some water skiers, so I quartered into the wake and it just rode the wave with no fuss. It's pretty stable and I think it should serve me well.I'm impressed with a 20 year old motor running like that. That's the first 6hp evinrude I've owned

PWC - as in Personal Water Craft - as in jet ski.

I would go ahead & replace the impeller unless you know that it was done in the past two years.

yah, I guess that is cheap insurance. It's pumping well, but I'm going to be a long way from home. What do you suggest for an emergency kit?extra shear pin, extra prop, plugs, and wrench?
