I have replaced a multitude of 9 HP and smaller outboard impellors and a couple in my old 25 HP Evinrude but never jumped into my 50 HP 3 cylinder until now.. I'm guessing it will not be "That Much" different but after trying to find the specific info in my service manual I have a couple questions before I start and go spend a bunch of money on lubes and glues that I might not need.

OMC Adhesive sealant - OMC Gasket Sealing Compound - OMC Gear Lube - and Tripple Guard Greese are the items I highlighted and have no knoweldge of.

It really makes it a little hard to follow when the manual covers so many motor types and mine is the LAST one in the list and seems to fall into the "All Other Models" paragraphs

It mentioned to use the Adhesive M Sealant on the O Ring that goes into the pump housing's groove. Is this real important to do and I saw note to use this sparingly??

Without going into a long winded "Question" thread I guess my main question here is can I get some of the products that are not OMC items at my local NAPA that will be up to par and work ok or should I go to the boat shop in town and get the exact products they listed to use??

The last question I have is to Exhaust Seal. It lists this on the 3 Cylinder "Only" and says to remove and discard?? I am not sure if my lower unit has this in it because I wanted to get some questions cleared up before I tear it down. What is the prupose of this? I couldn't find any info except that it was in a diagram and it said to discard it? Do I need it or should I scrap it??

Thanks in advance for any help or tips before I start. I did a search but didn't really find all the answers.. If ya'll have a link to another thread that will help then post it up..Thanks again for any help..Hank...Central Texas

Shouldn't be too bad since you are used to lower units. This one disconnects the shift linkage under the carb. Here is pic

As far as grease and sealants, use white motor assembly grease on the drive shaft splines,,,,not much, and real, real thin blue napa silicone to help seal water pump. When I say thin, I mean squirt some on your finger and rub onto dry clean surfaces. .005 This is a practiced mechanic trick.

Under the carb? I see a lower unit diagram but not sure what your talking about.. Is the linkage up under the motor cover actually under the lowest carb? Thanks for all the tips and info..Really appreciate it..Hank

Sounds like you have a seloc or clymer manual, the factory service book is far superior.
www.outboardbooks.com

Meantime go to evinrude.com and look up the exploded diagrams, see if the exh seal is listed.
