Re: 1st Boat 1967 Larson Please Help

Great job you are doing my friend, sure wish you were closer to Charlotte.. LOL

Here is a shot from the inside and I swear it appears to be 2 pieces not glassed together. I can even get the back part where I removed the rubguard a bit to move away from the bottom part. Guys take a look at this picture and see if you think it is glasses together. You can see a clear line between the top and the bottom and notice towards the back of the picture one screw for the rubguard in the top and one in the bottom. Also if I'm posting to many pics please let me know and I'll move them to my website.
Thanks again,
Jay

Thank You.
Looks like you should be ok. I can even see the filler between coats.
On mine you couldn't see the line when top meets hull at all. Also, mine didn't have any screws.

Hey Jay, I'm between Charlotte and Monroe. I'm new to this forum too having just bought a 73 Glassmaster.
Have you had your's out on Cane Creek Lake outside Waxhaw? It's a nice small lake perfect for testing your boat without the big water crowds of Lake Wylie and Norman.

I like that Larson, always have thought they were nice boats.
Good luck with it.:)

I at Rea Rd and 51 in Southeast Charlotte, so not far from you. We always go to Wylie as my friend has a real nice house down there near Big Allison Creek. That's where I got the boat. It has never been in any other water than Wylie in 39 years. I'll have to check Cane Creek out when I get her back into shape. Shooting for next Spring, this is now my winter project.
Take care

Anyone know where I can get a new rubrail and rubber for my boat?

Your rub rail looks to be in decent shape so you could re-use it when you put the boat back together. I used one of those green scrubby pads to clean mine up and it looks real nice. You could try it before buying another rub rail.

I saw a post on iboats a while ago about buying a rub rail, but I can't remember where. You could try the search and see what it turns up.

Those screws look pretty rusted. Make sure you use stainless when you put it back on. Also, I remember reading a post about using 3M sealer with the screws. Does anyone have any information on that?

Go to www.tacomarine.com to look at rub rail. They list all the rubrail they make with dimensions. So if you need rubrail, get the part number from the taco site then call iboats and see what the cost is. Even if you don't need the aluminum rail, the vinyl insert is inexpensive and makes it look nice and new.

Aluminum rail is very expensive and even more expensive to ship in long lengths.

Best thing I can suggest is to treat the rail you have like its gold. Carefully work out the dents and dings. Clean it all up. If you like, take it to a auto body shop and have it "straightened" and painted in a fresh silver color (even rust-o-lium works well on a budget) and install new vinyl insert.

I'm not sure, but I bet that "sealer" you see squeezing out between the top and hull is epoxy or adhesive of some sort. You may have to use a sawsall to cut the top off the hull. But then again, maybe not. Could just be those screws holding it together. These boats were generally not assembled with the intent of ever being taken apart again. You won't know until you get all the rail off and start prying and cutting.

Mark,

I was reading your restore job on your site with the video and all I can say is boy I wished you lived here in Chalotte so we could be friends.. LOL You did an unbelieveable job on you boat and I got some great ideas from you! The windshield most of all, I can't wait to try that out as my windshield looks just like the one you replaced. Thanks for doing such a great job of detailing the work that you have done so we can all learn from it. I can only hope my boat turns out half as nice as yours did.

Jay,

Thanks! I'm sure your boat will come out great. Keep the camera near and take lots of photos for us.

Don't throw out anything from the boat until AFTER the project is done. If it comes off the boat, put it in a box. No matter how big, rotten, rusted or small. I sold a few pieces that I thought were junk, like an original tach that was did not work and had a cracked cover, an aftermarket ignition switch, huge anchor, etc. Helps offset the cost of the project. Other stuff you will go searching for after you find out how much a new piece costs!

Good luck.
