96 four winns Ad..jpgWhy me? lol, after searching used boats, viewing several, listening to engines, drives, inspecting hauls, transoms, U name it.. I've become more educated then I wanted.. Well education is good, but, I expected to get educated once I owned one..

whelp now I'm a proud owner, after having made concessions to suit me wife, 'pretty is better' ha.. of 1 1996 Four Winns 190 Horizon DLX. yea.

just imagine only 2 grand.. yeah I could not believe it too.. especially when the guy acted like he'd take less!!

Why? unfortunately he did not volunteer that answer, nor did he speculate when I asked about the funny noise in the outdrive. Rather, he offered to take me out and test drive it.. remarking how well it runs and that you don't hear anything in the water..

Well sure there' a few other fixens it needs, but seriously,, a couple of seat covers and a good buff is not much to complain about.. The trailer though, I figured had to be the major reason he was so easy.. Four Winns might consider Aluminum in the future, er somtin.. while the trailer kind-a looks OK, it's not too happy.. (mental note:,, might consider washing Ur trailers every single time it touches water, before it drys. maybe get a hair dryer for it? lol)

I know auto engines, so, I can say this one sounds and runs sweet!..

So, I thought,, "OK, 'maybe' ' a gear or so in the out drive, need sifxin".. "how bad can that be?"

U-know? when ya looks with ignorance to buy a boat, there's ALWAYS, sumtin ya miss, or just plain over looks.. U get caught up in pretty,, wife factors, 'she likes it' or just to much to inspect for an ignorant dummy.

So, anyways,, the point..

This has a Cobra SX, 5.0 Volvo penta (ford) 302

Outdrive: Cobra SX: 1:66
ser# T0808167,
Prod # 3868389.

engine and outdrive are actually pretty too,, hardly a scale in the paint.. small wear signs.. very clean and obviously not 'auto salesman' detail,, just untouched cleaness and no rust.

save two,, He mentioned that he placed a newer prop, and there was this nice new and pretty stainless steal cover over the skag too..

I figure the guys who know boats, UNLIKE ME, up till yesterday already knows where I'm going with this..

Bent propeller shaft.

AND who knows what else??

I've browsed this four winns forum for the past day and a half.. and heck there's a few exceptional people out there, giving tips ! wow thanks for that you guys.!!

I'm not too sure that I'm in the bracket for boats,, disabled, low income etc.. so duhh I was shoppin on the cheap,, and heck I had just passed up a 1989 Grady white 22 WAC,, a bit ugly but nice engine for a whole 1 k..
wife and pretty factor, she wouldn't even board that one lol..
Yeah, Grady white,, I been reading these forums for the past 3 months..

oh well..

So.. HOLY HECK!! 96 Cobra SX Thats' a $6,000 OUTDRIVE!!??

The shaft alone, IF I can find it, is gonna be around 600 bucks??? OUCH!

Anyways,, anybody got one on the cheap?? LOL

I'm gonna need a service manual,, gonna need parts number lists, gonna NEED to discover IF and what other parts cross referance..

I went to the four winns site, and the Volvo penta site listed here, I'm not quite sure which one I've got, other then year 96 and 1:66 ratio and or can't reference by product code or serial number..

Is there a more common out drive I can replace this with?

which 'other' lower units will fit?,, is there other prop shafts inside of the SX models that are the same? gears, bearings etc?

Can I switch to a different ratio> ??

or what are my options??

Cobra SX, 5.0 Volvo penta (ford) 302

Outdrive: Cobra SX: 1:66

If I can't cut in to figure this out, I'm gonna be a the proud owner of a 'pretty' IF i buff it, fiberglass log in the driveway for a long, long time.. eurgh..'

well here is one option... you bought a 4k boat for 2k so take it to the nearest quality marine repair pay the $1000 to have it done and done right as well as have the insides looked at by a pro and get your boat back in 2-3 days and enjoy the water...you are still ahead of the game!
by the time you get to figure out what the part is, get it, plan the day or two to do the repair, buy the manual, have to go to the tool or marine shop 2-3x's and waste two weeks doing so you could be on the water mid week and know it was done right.

anyone that gets that good a deal should be prepared to have some repairs if you don't have it surveyed.
