Re: 1st Boat Restoration Need Help--1983 Hardhead

The advice given here, as already stated, comes from experience. I myself restore a boat nearly every year and sell it the following year, but I start with hulls in much better shape and don't make much money on them when I sell them, but I enjoy doing it. With that said, your hull needs so much major work all the guys here are just looking out for your wallet and the end product.

A little heated comments happens from time to time here and it's okay (to a point). Opinion are like a**holes, we all have a different one, but most of the time those opinions are there for a reason, other than "I think I'll tell this guy this or that".

If you've made up your mind as to what you want to do then go for. If you're just running things by the forum to see if it's okay or if it'll work that's fine too. Bottom line is we are all here to help with anything you run into and wheter the advice is taken or not it's still here. Once again the comments about start with a different hull, or it's not worth it are made only to help YOU.

So post the pictures and lets get this boat of yours water ready. Good Luck.

Hello Revans and welcome to Iboats !!

Ok..everyone hold the phone please...

I think the problem here is again Lack of LOOKING at the pics you provided...

If everyone will look at your origional pics they would find that " box thingy " in the middle IS infact the HULL and not a support for the deck. Its like a semi-tunnel hull correct :)

It looks like your ground down to raw hull fiberglass with NO wood in there at all.

In your case I would back/form the INSIDE...grind bevel and glass the Outside first..then grind and glass the inside Last.

I would use poly instead of epoxy for this.

The biggest thing is how your going to tie your deck in after the repairs are made ( grind glass up the sides ? ). You may have cut the deck a little close to the hull..

So everyone can start over and start posting some help :) ..

YD.

PS. I think thats kinda a cool hull :)

Re: 1st Boat Restoration Need Help--1983 Hardhead

Thanks Yacht Dr. you are correct and I apoligize if I did not explain it well enough but yes the box-like center part of the boat is part of the hull it's basically a tri-hull and that is the part that comes up in the middle. so yes I'm planning on doing exactly what you said by glassing to get the original form and level it all out to match the rest of the hull then working on the inside. In order to do so I have to pour from the inside first but I've looked into poly and I have decided to use it. After I do fix the hull and everything I am not sure how I am going to make a deck support structure that won't put alot of stress on the hull, especially the center part.

Man, I need some help then. Where is the hole that is shown clearly in the box section on the outside but NOT on the inside. I apologize if I have mislead the OP but I am NOT getting it. I see no evidence of these gaping holes from the pics of the inside. Why???

Ditto....if it's the hull why doesn't the hole show on both sides???

Re: 1st Boat Restoration Need Help--1983 Hardhead

Thank you very much for the feedback I do appreciate it.

I also think that there may have been a misunderstanding about the long center section. I just realized that I had taken pictures of the boat on the inside BEFORE ( I added caps :) ) I had grinded out the damaged spots. I can see daylight through each hole from the outside and if flipped again you would be able to see daylight the other way. I do apoligize for getting offended I just thought the boat had potential and wouldn't be hard to fix.

Read and look :) .

Again..Read and look.. :)

He flipped the boat...then cut out..then took more pics to post ( as You guys wanted :D ) . Thats why you only see holes on the second set of pics and not on the first set heheh.

I think a possible few " eeek gads my golly sorry about that dude " would be greatly appreaciated :) . ..

YD your correct!

I'll be the first one to say, Hey sorry dude! I didn't mean you any heartache or hassle and I didn't see the whole picture and grasp what you were trying to explain. It was a lack of communication.... I sincerely apologize for not asking for clarification instead of jumping in! Hope there's no hard feelings and I do wish you all the best with your current rebuild.

I still think grinding/beveling/glassing the outside is your safest ( not easiest but safest ) bet.

You said you were going to glass the whole Inside right ? 1708 ?

Okay, very sorry here, much better pictures now as I can see what's going on. Yep to fixin' the outside and then glassing the inside entirely. You'll have some serious faring to do on the outside, but very doable. Are you planing on painting the outside once the repairs are made?

You can build some temp. forms on the inside to support the glass during repairs. Some hard plastic film will keep the resin from adhering to the forms...

Okay I'll go from the outside. Will that youtube video still apply to this? Using the plastic cutting boat and wax paper for support for keeping the form while using poly? Instead I will tape the plastic on the inside and glass on the outside? I'm also not sure which ounce size of 1708 I should use? Suggestions on that would be great.

Yep, Now I see!!!! Do-able sure. Worth it? HMMMM!! I guess so if it's the hull you want. Your previous described procedures will work and I agree that 1708 IS the way to go. 1708 Contains double bias(17oz) stitched at 45degrees along with one layer of 3/4oz mat.
I wish you the best of luck with this project. There is a LOT of work ahead of you.
