Re: 1st boat. Towing with my Subaru

gees you guys are harsh. i pull my 78 larson with a 80hp merc weighing in at 2600 before battery and gas (100l) with a 2004 ford freestar van (fwd) it is slow yes but braking is fine and can still do 70mph. As for launching and retrieving not hard. spins a bit at a loose gravel ramp but put 150lb person on the front bumper while you slowly move forward and its fine. so would i pull a 2000 lb boat with a forester... yes i would without thinking twice as long as it has good vented brakes in the front and discs in the rear with nice pads.

And hell we pulled a 3600lbs camper (Braked) from winnipeg manitoba to ottawa ontario (2800kms) in 2005 with 5 people in the van and alot of luggage(we were moving). No problems at all, just didn't like the hills.

Welcome to the forum. Let's try to keep it current. This one is 2 1/2 years old. Geez, I hate picking on new guys. Really.:)

Re: 1st boat. Towing with my Subaru

iboats is a great forum, but one thing you notice instantly is people get EXTREMELY jumpy about towing anything with a vehicle with less than a 10k tow rating. People nearly recommend a 3/4 ton duelly for a 14' jon boat! The vehicle is only a very small equation of safe towing, the nut behind the wheel is the other 99% of the equation.

Anyway, yeah, old thread, but I'll add I tow 2000 pounds on a regular basis with my little subaru sports car. I'm at 100k miles and haven't replaced anything except regular maintenance. Stock clutch even. The car has more than enough power to drive any speed I want down the highway, and I have never come close to spinning a tire loading, even on sand. The biggest drawback is the mileage. I get 18-20 without a trailer, but it drops to about 11mpg when towing. (thirsty little turbocharger!)

Anyway, i'd take an experienced driver towing 2000 pounds with a vehicle rated at 2000 pounds over a overconfident/inexperienced driver towing 1000 pounds with a vehicle rated for 10k any day!
