Hey guys factory manual says for 1st hour torun motor at high idle then go from 800rpms up to 1500rpms. Should I do this in neutral or in gear? I was thinking about doing it in a bucket so that after the first hour I could let it cool down and re tighten the powerhead bolts before installing the lower cowling. Or does it need to happen in gear?

Not to dispute, but that's interesting. Quite a departure from what I used to know. But I am old school. Or just plain old. What motor are we talking about here?

Power head rebuild without lower end? Then you aren't breaking in the lower end again and gear shifting isn't important.

If its lower end too then you need to be shifting gears.

If its a new, old stock, never run engine... then you need to be shifting gears.

Generally the break-ins expect you to take it to the lake and putt around slowly for a while.
I'm not sure if the bucket is a good idea...
Maybe appx 2/3 (height, so you can dunk the lower end clear down as if the boat was floating tied to the dock ) 55 gallon drum... with the prop off, but I'd have a hose running into it because the engine will get even that much water pretty warm running it for an hour.

5 gal bucket might work for a 5 hp...

Use double dosage of oil for first 10 hours or so...I broke mine in at the lake...sorta putt around slow at first, then a little more, let it cool some...run it wide open just a bit....just baby it for a few hours...
