I was wandering if anyone can give me some helpfull advice about this boat i,m looking at.I,ve got a small runabout that i can trade, the only thing is i don,t have a clue about sterndrives or inboards. She runs a 1978 chrysler v8 and the stern drive i,m not sure about, she,s all alloy and looks ok for fish&diving .Is there anything i need to check hard out ,like cooling? alloy thickness?etc etc.
I,ve owned a few v8,s in my day so i guess the fuell consumption is about the same..
Any thoughts on the matter , please feel free.
i need enlightening.

cheers
daza

http://pictonmarine.boatpoint.co.nz...oatID=546163&TabID=95484&Alias=pictonmarinenz

Re: 1st inboard stern drive??

I'll bet it's a 318. I haven't seen an outdrive attached to one. I've only seen inboards. Inboards have a propshaft out the bottom of the boat and a rudder behind it. Sterndrives hang out the back and swivel. I have also seen jet drives that blast water out the back and steer by directing the blast with a nozzle. The one I saw had twin 318s on an aluminum ChrisCraft or similar vessel.

The page takes awhile to load. Interesting looking vessel! That's an outdrive. I have no idea who's. It's not OMC, MerCruiser, Yamaha, or Volvo. Until now I thought that was the complete list. Who else made an outdrive? This white one apparently exhausts out the back above the antiventilation plate and looks to have a pin-drive propeller. Otherwise it resembles a MerCruiser but it isn't.

IMHP the boat looks very nice but i think it will be very hard to keep any drive of that vintage in good running order

more than likely many parts are NLA and if the boat has been used a lot the drive has allready given its usefull service life

tommays

Chrysler outdrive, made by them, much older than 1978. I think from early 60s. I dont think they made them very long. Put it in a museum.

Looks like a Chrysler outdrive to me, or possibly an Eaton.

In either case, it's a REAL RARE bird.

I wouldn't touch it.

And ain't no parts available anywhere. Had one come in a few years ago with a blown lower unit. I think I found the last used unit in the states to replace it. Took me weeks of calling just to find that one. Wouldn't want to go thru that again.

daza1
Have a look at the Sea Nymph Commander on the same page.
A lot of those were supplied with a factory Volvo Penta as is this one.
Same kind of money but I suspect a much better boat.
They say it has a 270T outdrive so that should be Hydraulic Tilt / Trim. Good news if it has this.
They are a fairly good unit and there are a lot of parts around in NZ.
Call me if you wish. 027-4923674

Regards
Peter

I just looked at the rest of the pix. It is a "T" model.
Engine is 4 cylinder Volvo B20 engine, simple & reliable similar to this Volvo specs
The actual model details should be on a brass plate on the side of the block near the distributor.

Regards

Peter

Interesting that the web page doesn't list the boats age.

Is transplanting a Merc into it feasible (financially & technically)? If so, wonder how much you could negotiate the price down based on the fact that you know the outdrive is basically worthless cause you won't be able to get parts for it.
