Re: 1st post, total newb needs your thoughts!
Don't be afraid of the barges, they move real slow and you'll be fine as long you don't cross their bow too close.
The river seems to have some trash floating, and it looks strange because its brown most of the year. You just have to watch the river levels and don't go out when the river is real high or when it suddenly rises. When the river rises, it picks up some logs and sticks... they are easily avoidable if you watch for them. When the river reaches summer pool, it clears up and you won't find hardly any trash in it.
The river looks brown because of its sandy bottom. The sand is one of the big reasons I love the river. Nice beaches and beach parties!! Like someone stated above, there is just so much to see on the river... lakes get boring once you've seen them all and most lakes I've been to don't have too many beaches to hang out at. On the river we can pull up to the beach and gather some drift wood and cook a hotdog over an open fire, set some horseshoes in the sand and enjoy the day. You can also throw in a tent and camp right on the rivers edge... when I was a kid, we use to camp out on the river all the time. I loved it and still do.
Spend some time reading at this site: http://www.riverlorian.com/ And buy the Ohio River Guide Book too. The book has details of every mile of the Ohio river (where to anchor, camp, get gas, lock and dams, and the history of the river towns) Its an excellent guide if your wanting to learn more about the river in your area or if your planning a trip on the river.
I guess I just don't understand what's so great about river boating, especially on the ohio, you have huge barges coming by all the time, everytime I've been near the river there is a bunch of trash and logs floating around and it doesn't seem like a safe environment for any sort of watersports, what's the attraction?
