1st repaint for my 1985 MR outdrive, any tips? (pic inside)

a pic below is what I'm working with, I searched for a very long time but I have all new decals for the outdrive which was hard to find.

I want to repaint the outdrive before putting them on and the bellows are in great shape just replaced last season by myself.

question is since that paint has lasted so long I am thinking what I need to do is simply SCUFF the current paint and paint the outdrive with mercury phamtom black.

thing is should I put some primer in the areas thats bare in the picture on the lower part of the foot? if so what primer do you recommend for this?

also what would be somethign good to scuff the paint with that would be the right amount of scuff.

Do not sand blast it.

Just some 400 wet paper. Make sure you have the correct primer for aluminum.

You can get MC paint for the drive too.

Very important .....any down to metal (alu) spots MUST have an alu etching primer or the paint will not stick. there is another type ...its yellow ..can't remember the name anyway spend the $$$ on the primer ..other than going two part epoxy marine paint any good quality enamel like tremclad works fine ...the more thin coats the better ...if you need - new decals are available.

that yellow is zink oxide, same stuff they use on aircraft. zink chromate, me bad.

The decals I got were very hard to find some came tom ebay some from a place in seattle that sells discontiuned items and I am still short one decal per side.

I have 4 of the 6 for the kit. and I made my own for the igntion card covers, couldn't find that anywhere.

mine isn't an alpha one, alpha 1 decals are easy to find MR decals are not! so if you know where I can get them let me know.

also guys are you saying just primer the bare spots or after I scuff the paint primer everything?

All you need to do is prime the bare areas. Zinc Chromate is recommended for aluminum. West marine sells it. Most good NAPA stores do to. Be sure to scuff the bare areas first and prime right away before it re-oxidizes.

Went to order primer and paintfrom iboats.

there seems to be a yellow and a green Zinc Chromate Primer by Moeller is one better than the other for what I am doing with it?

I use the green, I believe most guys do too...
