2 + 2 Mercury 125hp

Do you have any ideas on how to eliminate the 2+2 so that the engine would work on all 4s all the time?

Wont run/idle worth a crap on low end, been tried and no successes. If its set up correctly and everything working properly you would not know or notice the transition unless someone told you it worked that way..

Study the sections on Fuel, Ignition, and proper adjustment of each, it makes a world of difference once it is dialed in correctly.

Add a 'vented' prop, and you will be amazed at the difference.
