Hi everyone I am a new iboats user and have been looking through it for quite a while and thought i could get some help. Anyway i have a 1989 VIP Vision with a 2.3L OMC (ford) I bought this boat knowing it had a few fuel/carb problems i believe i got those worked out, I went adhead and installed a new outdrive housing and impeller just for self assurance. I also put new points in then regapped and retimed to 10* BTDC. I ran it with the muffs on and it ran great, accellerated fine, idles fine the whole 9 yards. So i took it too the lake and it was kind of cold blooded getting started and staying running expecially trying to get to run in gear at idle. Once warmed up to operating temps it idled fine in gear and would run fine up to full power But when idled back into no wake it wanted to overheat to like 220*- 240*. I would put into neutral and run it to 2500rpm and it would cool down quickly back to 175*. Any ideas anyone maybe recheck my timing?

Pull out the t-stat. Run it without it. Post your result.

If that don't do it could be the riser clogged up. Pull it off and check it.

If it ain't the riser you have power steering?

Could be the heat exchanger clogged up.

If all that don't work, you have a flapper?

Heres a link #81 is the part could have broke off and blocking the exhaust.

Was the old impeller intact or was there pieces missing?
All it takes is just a small blockage to cause your problem.
I would back flush the whole cooling system to make sure.
I would replace the thermostat but not run without one...just my opinion..

I just wanted to see if it was the t-stat, not opened all the way.

And when he takes it out maybe there would be pieces in there.

I wasn't clear, don't run it all the time without a t-stat, just to see if it is the problem.

I'm betting it's maybe a combination of things.

Riser clogged, or t-stat and riser clogged.

Yeah i had forgot to say that i had put a new t-stat thinking it might have been clogged or inop but there was no large pieces missing from the old impeller just very small rubber fillings. There is no power steering. i did pull the circulating water pump off today and took a look in and around the cylinders or what i could see looked ok but i think i might back flush it and remove the hose coming off of the outdrive/transom water pump. Not sounding dumb or anything i am just unfamiliar with marine, where is the riser and flapper?
