1998 40 HP Mercury 2 cycle oil injected motor. SN: 0G650371

I can get the boat to start up fine, it will run at all RPMs under no load. Sound great.

Put the boat in gear, drive for about 3 - 5 minutes and then the motor dies.

I am able to start the boat back up under no load again, however as soon as I try putting it in gear and under load, the motor instantly dies again. This continues until the battery is dead. Only able to operate for the initial 3 - 5 minutes.

Had the boat towed back to my dock. Charged the battery up and a few days later went down, fired the boat up, let it run in idle for some time, seemed to be running good, took the boat back out on the water, same experience. could drive for about 3 - 5 minutes and would die off, and would not be able to drive it again.

My thought is that this is a fuel issue as I can start it up and run it after it dies, but then dies out again as soon as I put it under a load, but the fact that I am able to drive it for the first 3 - 5 minutes makes me question if that is a likely cause or not.

This is the same fuel that it had in it when I winterized it last year, I did add stabil to it.

My plan (was going to do today but has been raining all day) is to mix in some seafoam and top off with fresh gas. Currently has about a half tank of last years gas with stabil in it now. I also am going to change out the spark plugs.

Looking for other ideas as to what could cause this... is it a matter of the engine getting up to a certain temperature causing a component to then fail?

I was also going to replace the coil packs on it as there is a couple cracks in the boot of the wires however they don't appear to be that bad, but I found those to be about $90 each and there are 3 of them, so I would prefer to not replace them unless there is a high probability of them being the issue.

check for spark as soon as it dies. also check if the primer ball is soft at the same time. This will point you in the right direction...fuel or spark....

How do I go about checking for spark as it dies? It will start right back up after it dies just wont handle a load, so seems there would have to be spark to start back up. (or are you thinking that maybe 1 of the 3 cylinders is no longer sparking and I just cant tell when it is not under load?)

I would try running on a different fuel tank or with a different fuel line.

Fuel tank vent open? Primer bulb getting sucked flat? The bulb will get soft after the engine starts because fuel is sucked through it so the "hard primer bulb" after startup is not necessarily true. You can buy an inexpensive spark tester at any auto store but I doubt that's the issue. The fuel pump may have gone bad but there is lots of other stuff to check first.

Just looking for ideas. Here is one.
It could be the orientation of your primer bulb, have you checked that the arrow on the primer bulb is not only pointing in the direction of flow but also pointing towards the sky. If the arrow is pointing to the floor the check valves will be normally closed restricting your fuel flow and making priming difficult.
Other than that my gut feeling says your near future will include a fuel pump rebuild.
