I have been running Johnson/Evenrude 2 cycle oil that I buy from Wal-Mart for $17 a gal. in my 1994 225 carburated Johnson. Should I go to a synthetic such as Penzoil 100% synthetic ($20-gal.) or Penzoil blended ($9-gal), or stay with the stuff I have been using. Engine runs fine, but smokes a little at idle. What's the difference between Penzoil blended synthetic and 100% synthetic oil? I plan on doing more trolling at 3-5 mph or so, that's why I am considering the change.
Stalker

I forgot to tell you that I premix at 50:1. and that the engine is mounted on a 21' Sunbird walk around cuddy.
Stalker

If you're spending most of your time trolling, then 100% synthetic is the way to go...
Amsoil HPI or AIO, Johnson/Evinrude XD-100, Penzoil total synthetic to name a few....
All of the above are made for pre-mix and oil injection....

If I were doing a lot of trolling with an engine of that size, I would definatly go with a full synthetic as Walleyehead has stated. Amsoil has a new 100:1 outboard only , 100% synthetic, now I know that this seems to be way too high of a mix, but this oil has no thinning agents in it and is in a 8 Oz. bottle for a 6 gal mix. Normally 16 Oz.per 6 Gals, You do the math. You will have very little smoking and probably never fowl plugs again. Also great off season protestion.

Just as you'd think. The blend is part TCW-3/part synthetic. The 100% synthetic is :D 100% synthetic.

-W

Thanks for the info. How good is that Penzoil synthetic blend? I will probably be trolling for kings and a few other species but will still be doing a lot of fishing while at anchor.

Stalker

It would be fine, less smoke and fowling than the regular stuff! Its a good oil, theres worse and there is better. There are Geos and there are Porsches, they both will get you there!

I use the Pennzoil blend in my ole V6 'rude and spin it in tha lower to middle 6's on a regular basis and it works fine. I do run it about 40:1 (16oz.oil and 5gal.fuel) though. It just makes me feel a little better.

c/6
Hooty

It would make me feel a little better too!

Why not use a full synthetic if your pushing your engine that hard.

Just curious!
