2 cycle oil addvise

I just got a 1983 115 hp Mariner. The manule says to use the mercury 2 cycle oil to mix with the gas. The mercury oil costs about $30.00 a gal. I went to Wal Mart and they have 2 cycle oil for about $12.00 a gal. The bottle has mariner outboards listed on it. I'm trying to keep the opperating cost down. I'm afraid to try the Wal Mart brand. Has anybody tried the Wal Mart brand and how were the results? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Michael

I agree, I have used the wall-mart stuff before and it gets you by. There will some folks talking about the motor coking up but just decarb each year and and pre-mix the oil to the proper ratio. I will say though I moved over to the Pensoil full synthetic for only about 16 dollars a gallon and have had good luck with it. It doesn't smoke, and my motor runs well off of it.

I like my customers to use a "brade" name oil but engine that I have torn down that use the "wally" oil show no more problems (coking) than any other oils

Not to be snotty or anything but do you happen to have a picture of a manifold ran off of quicksilver? I'm guessing there will be a difference, but by how much?

Yeah, I don't want to be snotty either but Laddie can you state for sure this carbonizing was a direct result of using Walmart oil?

You did know that Walmart Supertech oil is actually made by Sopus, the same company that makes Penzoil and Quaker State?

I use pennzoil synthetic blend, about 16/gal and a pretty good oil.

When I bought a Bass Tracker 5 years ago. It needed some work. A machanic I use told me to use the Wal-mart brand. He said it was as good as Quicksliver(judging from the motors he had work on). The 60 HP Has run Flawless since then. I also run this brand in my other boat with 150 merc. I will use no other oil if I have enough on hand.

Don't know how badly the fuel mixture was screwed up on that Merc, Laddies, but the idea that it was caused by using a correct ratio of SuperTech is very unlikely.

This is what I tell my customers. "No. You don't have to run Merc or Quicksilver oil. But I would recommend using an oil that's sold by a company that manufactures an engine." Guess what guys... If an engine manufacturer is gonna' put their name on a bottle of oil, you can be damn sure that they have made sure it's up to snuff. I know that none of these companies actually make their own oil, but they all have very stringent requirements issued to those companies that DO make their oil. No engine manufacturer is going to want to have issues with their motors because of the oil the recommended for use. Especially when it's still under warranty. Save the Wally oil for your chainsaw or weed wacker.

Dave, no problem with your question here's photos of a 1987 25 HP that has always been run on Mercury oil at 50 to 1 and never decarbed as you can see little or any carbon a normal looking exhaust tube, finally the chrome chipped on the cyl. walls and is being repaired.

As you can see there is very little carbon in the exhaust tube. The manufacture don't surprise me, most cheaper oils are manufactured by a large company to lesser specs.

JB, All I can go by is what the customer tells me and he says that he changed to Super Tech 3 years ago and mixes at a 50 to 1 ratio, why would he lie? I have seen many engines destroyed by lack of oil and had people try to say the oil was mixed properly. We run some of our racing engines at 12 to 1 and in 50 years never seen one look like the first exhaust photos I posted. Although we do prefer Mercury oil in our engines we have used Texaco, Marathon and Shell with no bad side effects, So we are not strictly Mercury nor are we dealers or shareholders pimping a product, as some have on iboats.
