2 cycle oil question

I went to the local marine store today to buy some 2 cycle oil for my 150 merc and 40 Johnson(both mid 80's). I usually always get the brand name for each motor, but this time they talked me into buying bulk oil because it was cheaper and they said it would work in both outboards. When I got home an went to put it in the resevour I noticed it was a yellowish or gold color. My questions are this, is it ok to put this oil in both motors, and have any of you seen this color of 2 cycle oil? It looks like lower unit oil! Vey inexpensive 13 bucks a gallon. Am I taking a chance that I shouldnt?
Thank you
CU

--------------------
RUNNING THE MOTOR WHILE LISTENING TO THE HORN WILL MAKE YOU MORN!!

As long as it is TC-W3 certified it will be fine, CU2NITE.

I can't imagine a marine supplier selling you oil that is not TC-W3.

Use the money you saved for gas. :)

Cu2nite, $13/gallon is not real cheap. You can get vanilla TCW-III oil for ~$7/gal at WalMart.

Re: 2 cycle oil question

Thank you all for your responses. I feel much better obout putting this oil in my motors. I think I will start useing the cheaper tcw-3 oil. I'll do like JB said, save money on oil and put it towards gas.
Cu

---------------------
RUNNING THE MOTOR WHILE LISTENING TO THE HORN WILL MAKE YOU MORN!!

Re: 2 cycle oil question

I have bought a lot of bulk oil from the local OMC/BRP and Mercury dealers, but haven't bought other major brands such as Bombardier, Yammie, etc. I've also bought a bunch of different other brands of TCW3, and I've never seen golden/yellow color, it's always blue, green or purple, as far as I can remember. You might call the store and ask what brand of bulk oil and just double check to make sure it's right. I have no reason to distrust a marine dealer, but people make mistakes all the time; maybe they have non-TCW3 oil in bulk and someone accidently filled your container with it.

Some other sources of good, brand name, oil, but often cheaper - look for Castrol Super Outboard TCW3 or Havoline - you can often get cases of quarts or gallons for a good price. I've bought some Quicksilver in gallons at Sam's Club for a good price as well. I tend to buy "not the cheapest" and look for "name brands" (no objective reason though), but shop and change brands depending on what's on sale. When I run out of my fairly large supply of the above Castrol and Quicksilver, I'm going to run a few quarts of something really cheap like the Supertech, just to see if I can observe any differences in low and high speed performance, or smoke and smell. I'm of the opinikon that any TCW3 oil is probably just fine in terms of wear and tear, but there might be differences in smoke, smell and performance. I haven't personally observed this yet though.

PS: again, I don't claim to know all TCW3 oils - but wouldn't you expect it to be the colors I listed above - to dye the mixed fuel? Yellow/golden would be invisible when mixed with gas I would think. Just another reason to double check with the store.

Pennzoil oil is yellow, like honey yellow, including their 100% synthetic lower unit oil.

Mark

Not Pennzoil 2-cycle oil, it is not yellow... Even the synthetic blend and 100% synthetic.. That is all I use.. It is the blue color.... Of course their lower unit lube and 4-cycle oil is however...

Ben,
Check that stuff out, I've never heard of that color.. And makes me wonder who manufactured it and if it is TCW3.... Do you know what brand it is????
Let us know...

I've used regular el-cheapo Pennzoil TCW3 that you see in every store in the world in quarts and also the Pennzoil full synthetic TCW3 sold by the gallon and both were dark color (dark blue if I remember).

Re: 2 cycle oil question

Wow I'm glad I haven't put that stuff in my motors yet!! I think I will call the marine tomarrow and ask, but I'm sure even if they did give me the non tcw3 stuff they're not going to tell me. I think I may just cut my losses and get something in a container, that way I know it's tcw3. 26 bucks is very little compared to a junk motor. I agree with everything you all have posted, and I've come to the conclusion that if it's tcw3 I'm ok, but I've been around boat motors many years and I also haven't seen a 2 cycle oil that is yellow or gold! Thank you all for the responses.
Cu

--------------------
RUNNING THE MOTOR WHILE LISTENING TO THE HORN WILL MAKE YOU MORN!!

I'd sure call them. The shops I deal with would probably admit the mistake if it were made. I could sure imagine if a shop services 4 stroke engines, they'd have bulk motoroil as well as bulk TCW3 - and could conceivably make a mistake. Please let us know, I'm sure curious!

Some air cooled 2 stroke oils are yellow/clear. It wouldn't be recommended for a water cooled two stroke though.

Re: 2 cycle oil question

KCLOST;

You're absolutely right on the colors. I primarily had their 100% syn lower unit oil in mind (which is the last of their oil I used recently, when I responded and have used their 100% 2 cycle oil which is blue as you say. Maybe TCWIII specs call for the color??????

Sorry for the disinfo......your mind is the first thing to go....dah! Grin

Mark

Re: 2 cycle oil question

Well I called them and they say it's 2 cycle tcw3 oil, but they did give me an attitude. So I'm going to ditch the stuff and get a store bought container of tcw3. I'm not going to risk the health of my motors right before summer! Thanks for all your opinions, that helped alot. Oh I'm done with that marine, thankfully I have 3 others in the area to chose from.
CU

------------------
RUNNING THE MOTOR WHILE LISTENING TO THE HORN WILL MAKE YOU MORN!!

Re: 2 cycle oil question

There are non-dyed TCW3's out there. I use a golden-colored TCW3 Bombardier oil in my liquid-cooled Ski-doo. Great oil.

Color doesn't mean much. It just helps identify mixed fuel. Keep in mind most non-TCW3, air-cooled 2-stroke oils will be dyed too. You don't want to use them.

This would be a clue to me, they should have told you, " Oh ya, its XXXXX oil, its TC-W3 rated, It comes from XXXX, Its allways looked like that"!
