2 cycle oil uses

I have 2 gallons of mercury quicksilver 2 cycle oil. Would I be able to use this oil in 2 cycle engines other than an outboard - like my weedwacker-trimmer?? tyhanks

do a search....I believe the answer is NO as TCW (Two Cycle Water) is for water cooled engines......I may be wrong, but I recall a big debate a while back.

As KK said, air cooled 2 strokes require a higher temp oil than water cooled (outboard).<br /><br />Use Weed Eater (Poulan), or any other oil designed for chainsaws, etc.<br /><br />Moving to Non-Boating Tech.<br /><br />Good luck.

I use up odd oils as chain saw bar lubricant. As mentioned, don't use it in air cooled engines.

I was told that 12oz/ per gallon of HD 30whieght oil was better for 2 stoke air cooled engines than using 2 stroke eninge oil. The guy owned a rental place, and he supplied the fuel for all the 2 stroke tools he rented out. He said this made the weed whacker and chainsaws last longer. Anyone else hear of this??

I just sold 4 gallons of quicksilver in my local free (things for sale paper) called the Shopper for $20.00. It was a free listing. The guy was happy to get it and I had calls all weekend. Finally put a message on my phone that it was gone.

Shoulda emailed me LD...I would have taken it. Pretty much all TCW-3 oil that is not OEM says it is ok to use in air cooled engines. Quicksilver is no different. It's certainly alot better than 30 weight oil. I know someone who refuses to use anything but ATF. I wouldn't use it though. Given the extremely small amounts of fuel weedwackers and chain saws use, synthetic is CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP!

I am no expert on this but the area I live in is used heavely by the logging industry. These guys use stihls and 30wt motor oil! I know one old timer that has been using a McCulock for over 40 years this way. Back in the 50's Evinrude recommended one quart on 30wt non-detergent oil to 2 gallons of gas...16 to 1 mix, whow!!

A quart to 2 gallons is 8:1. At 8:1 you might get away with chicken fat. <br /><br />Decarb cocktail, anyone??

You are so right J.B. One pint to 2 gallons of gas.....the 50's were a long time ago for someone with CRS!!(Can't remember S##T)

Back in the old days we used 30 weight for the chains saws. I don't remember if there was such a thing as 2 cycle oil back then (circa 1960). I forgot the mix ratio but you can still do it if you want to they just smoke like heck. I only do it now if I'm out of 2 stroke & regular oil is all that's available. I was a gardener for 10 years & all I ever used was outboard 2 cycle oil from K-Mart in my weed eater, blower, chainsaw & hedge trimmer. I figure if it's good enough for a several hundred horsepower outboard, it's good enough for the little yard engines.<br /><br />Give a man a fish & he'll eat for a day. Teach him how to fish & he'll sit in a boat & drink beer all day.

I cant hardly beleive you got away with that for that long, I hear horror stories of people doing that and there equipment didnt last a week. I sure wouldnt recomend it, but it sure seems YOU got away with it.

Chainsaw bar's are vary forgiving, you can run almost anything you want in them so long as it is not to thin/thick and is a lubricant. I know people that run used motor oil in them. As for using diffrent oil's to mix with gas, well...I will leave that up to yall.

I only recently started using synthetic in my 2 cycle equipment. Before that I also used outboard oil for several years. No problems. Like I said, it may not be the best oil, but all of them say they are ok for use in small air cooled engines. It's certainly going to be a hell of alot better than 30 weight oil...

I have (like JB) used only one type 2-cycle oil (usually walmart) in everything I own. I have used 30wt when TCW wasn’t close at hand. Had a ’73 85hp Evinrude that was always ran this way, I put so many hours on it that the throttle linkage wore out!, Sold it 2 years ago and it still ran OK. Homelite chain saw, countless bars and clutches over 30 years and still runs. Very important if you use 30wt at LEAST double the ratio, do not use the TCW ratio. No, I am not recommending that you do this, I am just trying to prove a point. If you follow the OEM’s recommended service you can’t go wrong…..Be aware of marketing hype and remember that profits are their priority. While they say they have a better product (and usually do) the functional difference is usually negligible

Not quite.<br /><br />I use WalMart SuperTech TC-W3 oil in water cooled 2 stroke outboards ONLY.<br /><br />I use Poulan Chainsaw oil in all my air cooled 2 strokes (including any air cooled outboards that happen to be in the motor pool at the time), Mobil 1 in my truck and gas burning 4 strokes and Kubota 30W Diesel oil in my tractor.<br /><br />I don't use Wal Mart TC-W3 in everything I own.
