i have an 89 suzuki dt115 that i just bought a few days ago. the guy told me it is a 4 stroke motor but it has an oil bottle. i am guessing that this means it mixes the gas and oil. my question is do i use 4 cycle oil or 2 cycle oil

Google the model number or get a service manual to find out.
I doubt a 1989 Suzuki outboard will be a four stroke. Most likely an oil injected two stroke.

The model number, DT115, designates it as a TWO stroke. Use only TC-W3, 2 stroke, outbpard oil

You need a manual. Don't attempt to use it until you have some acquaintance with it.

Yes. I believe, though, the Suzuki injection system is pretty reliable ... ;)

Anthony,
To a thread search and read about the pros and cons of removing the oil injector. You may change your mind.

The Suzuki oiling system is probably the most reliable one out there.Don't be afraid to keep it. I have put Suzuki oiling back on after friends have removed them and they are running fine. One of my boats has a DT140 and I simply check that oil is flowing at the beginning of the season, there is a spec in the manual for this, and it runs beautifully. Probably don't need to do that but I am fussy.
I use Penzoil synthetic Blend two stroke oil on all my motors and never a problem.
Be sure to not let any dirt into the oiling system.

Re: 2 cycle or 4 cycle oil

I suspect you paid a four-stroke price for a two-stroke engine unless you got one whale of a deal. For future reference, four stroke engines look just like the engine in your car except it stands on end rather than crosswise like your car. They also have oil in the crankcase, just like your car and as such they have a dipstick. While an oil injected two stroke may have a dipstick, it will be in the oil resevoir which is the plastic tank in which "two-stroke" oil lives. Four stroke engines have a cap on top of the engine in which engine oil is added and there is no separate external resevoir. A major tip off is that four strokes, just like your car have an oil filter which is pretty hard to miss. Two strokes do not have one. Remove the cover from a two stroke engine and the spark plugs are looking at you. On a four stroke they are deeply recessed between what are the camshaft covers. A two stroke head is nearly as flat as a dinner plate because they don't have a camshaft. Lastly, nearly every four stroke on the planel has some words on the cover that reads: Four-Stroke. Armed with this you should be able to figure out what you have. As was pointed out, you really need two manuals -- the Owners Manual, and a Service Manual. Screw up removal of the oil injection system and you will wish you had kept your fingers off of it.
