Can anyone tell me what mix i need for a 1957 5.5 Johnson sea horse ? Also i was told that the older motors do not have a fuel pump- how does operation differ from a newer outboard?

i would mix at 50:1 i am not sure about the fuel pump on the older models though. it could possibly just work by vacuum from the motor? i would get a manual and see what that says.

I think your oldtimer wants 24:1 (1 qt TCW-3 to 6 gallons)

2 line pressurized tank, no fuel pump. instead of moving a diaphram in a pump it pressurizes the tank . and yes 24:1 tcw 3 outboard oil.

Yes you can use any 2 stroke oil as long as it has the meets or exceeds tcw3 rating blah blah... but Id use a synthetic or syn blend even just solely cause it pollutes less. old motor pukes oils and gas into the water like mad.

side note if your setting up a pressurized tank, make sure you dont swap the lines around and it doesnt leak, check for any hissing or oil stains down side of tank coming from the top plate. Last thing you need is pressurized tank hissing gas fumes in your boat....they tend to go boom easily.

I was going to ask what the advantage was to having a fuel pump rather than pressurized tank- sounds like safety is a factor

yes and no I meant if its not maintained and it is leaking gas fumes it is a bomb. i havent switch but more out of laziness to convert the motor over.

My theory on toys like boats, water crafts etc is make things as safe and simple as possible, i find boats are one of the most neglected toys. Especially up here where they are stored for half the year. Everyone makes the mad dash to the cottage or wherever to get it out of the water at the last minute, then the list of things from the summer you put off fixing/maintaining get left for spring to be done , then spring rolls around and you just want to rush and get it in the water to use and most things just get left for next weekend and weekend after that till it finally fails and your forced to fix it.

Anyways im guilty of it and yes new style tank is less maintenance and safer.

Pressure tanks are fine as long as maintained (hoses, keep rust under control, no leaks).
