Dumb question # 1
1981 50hp 4 cyl
How much does the motor weigh?

Really Dumb question #2

How much effect will having the tach set on 2 cylinders when you are actually running a 4 cylinder? 1st time out I thought I was going to blow up my motor. WOT was over 6300 rmp so I backed off to 5500. I switched from a 9.9 to the 50. It never dawned on me untill I was reading a article in the new Bass & Walleye Boat Mag. I called my dealer today and he said that the correct setting actually depends on the alternator, not the # of cylinders. Is this true?

Thanks,

Rick

Re: 2 Dumb Questions

Yes, Rick, it is true.

4Stroke engines feed tachs from the distributor, so tachs are marked to set them for the number of cylinders.

Most 2 strokes feed the tach from the stator so you have to set them according to the number of alternator poles in the stator, not the number of cylinders.

I have no idea what your engine weighs, but if I had to guess I would guess around 250#.

Good luck. :)

#1) 180 lbs.

#2) I'm not sure but I think the dealer is right. According to Teleflex's website Merc's from 6 to 25 hp are set at 4 poles. Most of the larger two stroke engines are set at 6 poles.

http://www.tflx.com/PDF/99320.pdf

edit: JB types faster than I do.

Re: 2 Dumb Questions

The tacho for a 1981 2-stroke should be set to '12-pole alt', or just 'alt' on the back of your tacho. The tacho takes its pulses from the stator windings, which are all the same on the Mercs, regardless of the number of cylinders.

Chris...........
