so finally got this new to me outboard to fire up, however, it only runs for a few seconds then dies.
already checked these
compression: 120
points: .020
spark plug gap: .030
low speed needle: 1 1/2 turn from seat
hi speed needle: 3/4 turn from seat

I can get it to fire up after several pulls and playing with the choke but it wont stay running. spark plug is brand new.

any idea? also, if I take out the spark plug and turn the flywheel by hand, it hardly spins, half a turn at most. is it supposed to spin freely?

thx.

Is the gas tank mounted on top of the engine or is it an external gas tank? If its an external gas tank, hold the tank above the motor and let gravity feed the fuel. If that works you know its the fuel pump.

How can it run if it will only turn 1/2 turn? Whatever, it should rotate freely with the plug out. By any chance did you or somebody else replace the coil? Was the clearance between the coil and flywheel magnets set?

it's 1 1/2 turn, not 1/2.
I dont think flywheel is rubbing on the coil, how do i set clearance btw? seems resistance is coming from lower unit, just a hunch.

Try opening the low speed needle more, CCW.

Oops, I didn't see that part about the stiffness of the crank turning. Something is binding. It should turn freely.

It could be something simple, like a bad spark plug wire. I hope the lower unit gears are not damaged.

When the coil laminations are dead on flush with the mounting bosses on each side, the gap will be correct (no binding). Additionally, you need to check the intensity of the spark produced by the magneto — need an open air adjustable tester like this:
