My 2 HP Mate ran fine a few years ago, but not used since due to a driveshaft seal leak. I think I have that leak resolved but now can't get it started. Tank and carb cleaned thoroughly, fresh fuel and spark plug, and (I thought) a good spark. Refuses to even think about starting. I pulled the flywheel and found the coil cracked with a white residue on it - pic attached. Is this typical? PXL_20220511_230514369.jpgPXL_20220511_230528629.jpg

Yeah big cracks no spark... Coils are in the realm of $20. Clean the points, test or change the condenser and itll run with a new coil

Typical??? You bet. ALL single and twin OMC motors of that vintage will have cracked coils like that, unless they have already been replaced.

Very typical.----Most of these motors in running condition have had the coils replaced.

Parts are cheap and much easier to get than many newer motors !!!-

make certain you line up the coil edges with the mounting. fingernail should not snag...up or down . put one drop of 30 oil on the felt and if you are going to go to the trouble of changing the coil may as well change the plug wire which is probably as old as the coil !
