I have a 9.9 Montgomery Wards sea kng. I have the motor on a 14ft Starcraft sealite. The prop on the motor is two blade and there are a few dings in the prop. I want to replace it with a new one. I am unsure what prop to put on. I was wondering if a three balde would give any better performance over a two blade.

Re: 2 or 3 blade prop

If you give us the model number we can figure who built the motor.
Probably Chrysler/Force.But could be others. If your prop is dinged you definately need to get it fixed or new.
They say a 2 blade is the most efficient design.Generally speaking number of blades are not directly involved in speed 2 blades is most efficient,3 blades
more universally used.4 blade generally for certain problematic low end performance needs.Holeshot, heavy loads etc.
All that being said I would stick with the stock design. Usually a number on prop indicating demensions __ X __ (Diameter X pitch).Sometimes only a part number.Dealer may be able to help id size.
Pitch has the most effect on performance. You can have your prop repaired at a prop shop Though on little props new may be as cost effective.
Depending on present pitch, if you run a lot with a couple of buddies and gear you may be able to go down a demension in pitch to push the load easier. But keep in mind when empty you may over rev.It would be good to beg borrow or buy a tach. Tiny tach is inexpensive and easy to install.
Its good to know where your rpms are now so you know better what you need to shoot for.
You can also improve performance a little by raising the motor vertically 1/4 inch at a time until just before ventilation becomes a problem. This will go better with a good prop.(be sure it pumps water)
Just put 1/4 inch sticks on the top of the transom.Be sure the clamp screws have a good bite.
When alone a tiller extension helps so you can sit on the middle seat it will help it plane easier. You can also carefully adjust the motor trim.
