Ok guys I have posted similar questions before and got some responses. I'm really not looking for the generic answer/everyone has a different opinion type non answering answer. I am about to buy a boat(again) for mostly off shore diving and fishing for the west palm beach, fl area no more than 5 miles off shore type boat. I am just curious as to everyone's opinion/suggestion on what brands hold up best to saltwater, how much hp is needed for the boat(for arguments sake a 20' cc seafox), 2 or 4 stroke buying up to 5 yrs old, and what brand you like. This is more of a poll since I know everyone has a different opinion on brand and stroke but just getting a feel for what the majority of experienced boaters take a liking to. If it helps I will look between 17-21 ft as I have a 6cyl jeep wrangler and 21' is pushing it, and the occupants will be no more than 5 or 6. Really more engine question/forum but while im here any boat mfg type suggestions are appreciated.

Get an Evinrude ETEC of 70-100% of the boat's power rating.

End of non-answers.

You want specific answers to a generic non-question? Ain't no such thing! But:
1: 2/4 stroke = strictly personal decision. Current crop are all good motors. Buy from reputable local dealer so service is readily available if needed.
2: Engine size: 70% (min) to 100% of max for power
3: Boat Mfg & Model = Whatever YOU feel you need.
4: Boat size = whatever your vehicle + load is safe to tow with

Re: 2 or 4 stroke, yama/uki/rude/son/da type question?

The last time we bought an outboard, we looked at what the commercial boaters in our area were using; in our case, the local guides and mullet fleet all had yammys. I was 2 when we bought that Yamaha and its still sitting on the stern, and runs like a champ. Was that because it was a Yamaha or because we maintain our stuff-you pick. Regardless of what you buy, maintain it-we flush after every use, change our impeller annually, pay attention to gauges etc. Do the same and you should get a good long life out of your engine-with regards to the rest of the questions: 70-100 percent of rated power, 2-4 stroke both are good personally i would recommend 2 but it's your choice.

E-Tec
70% + of rated HP without going over.
Boat that suits your needs whatever they may be.
No heavier than your tow vehicle will pull (and stop) safely.
