Hi, I am a first time boater and have a question. Is a 1975 Mercury 650 65 hp 3 cyl a 2 stroke or 4 stroke motor?

Re: 2 or 4 stroke

I've got a '74 merc 650 on my pontoon boat. I wouldn't own another one. I've heard from many others that the 3 cylinder merc 65's aren't the greatest mercury ever made. Still, it's got jbweld holding the water jackets and exhaust cover together and still runs good. I hope to get another season out of it. Do you have one or are thinking of buying one? It is most definitely a 2-stroke, BTW--as coolguy said. just about all of them were in the 70's and 80's, and most of the '90s, as far as mercs were concerned.:)

yes this is why im worried about him getting the motor. i nice 90 merc would be nice. but u can always look for a nice used eivnrude johnson all the way back to i think 1954. there r still many parts. if u can find a nice 70 or 80 motor that be good since u can acually rebuild those incase something happens
