1977 Evinrude 85HP
Changed waterpump and tstats and is working fine.
looking from stern to bow, the 2 stbd cylinders are cooling fine. The port 2 cylinders are getting too hot.
Can this have to do with sparkplugs or blocked waterways for cooling water. or maybe something else ?
I also suspect that the horn is not working.

any help appreciated.

How do you know they are running hot?

How are the deflectors? Head gaskets?

islandkiwi,

It's simple enough to check the warning horn circuit.

1. Unplug the sensor wires, on the heads (tan wire)

2. With key on (not running) ground the harness end of the wires to the engine block, horn should sound.

Island kiwi,
If you have any mates involved with Motorsport see if you can borrow an Infra Red Temp Gun.
That will tell you instantly what the temp differential is around the block. BNT had some on sale recently for around $225.00. They are a good investment. I have used one for years for racing and find them so versatile.

regards

Peter

Islandkiwi....is the port bank running so hot you can't touch it or just running warmer than the starboard bank? The port banks tend to run warmer than the starboard banks.

OBJ

Thanks...the port side cylinders are running hotter, but I can still touch them without burns. They are running hotter than the stbd ones.

Is this normal ? and ofcourse why ?

thanks mate,

Back to the question about the deflectors -- have they been replaced?

I mean just a little warmer kiwi. It's most noticable at idle. If it's "real" warm, then ya' need to answer Dhadley's question on the deflectors. If there is one that has moved or washed out short-circuiting water flow, then it would need addressed before serious cylinder damage occurs.

As to "why", it's the way the flow path is through the engine block. Starboard side gets the cool water first.
