Ahoy,

permission to come aboard sir?

Yep, I am a newby and this is my virginal question:

I have a evinrude yachtwin 4 hp (4136d)

I am in the process of replacing the points, and have become frustrated with the installation of the 2 pc (who was the engineer that designed that??)

What is the best way to install the puppies??

Thanks

Custer

Re: 2 pc poinst ($^%&@#*#^%)

Welcome to iboats.

2 piece points were common place years ago! Yes they are a PITA but my best suggestion is to walk away a few times.... and be patient.

I never personally had a trick....except I make sure I hold my mouth the right way. The engineer who designed the 2 piece points is probably long dead!!!!

I just read through a service manual I had to see if there was a suggested trick and the only thing that was obvious was to install them very clean.

Perhaps someone else will chime in.

Again welcome!!

When I first started messing with 'em, I serviced one pointset completely, leaving the other intact for comparison. They're actually pretty easy.. I'm sure if you search this forum you'll find the procedure all broken down. J/E used the same ignition 2-40hp from '52-'73. If you can do one-you can do 'em all.. If you're having trouble installing the point 'rocker' piece, push the spring in to the point arm while sliding it on the post to get the spring behind the 'boss' post. Probably wrong terms but you'll know what I mean..
Good luck!

Fit the larger of the two pieces over the small adjusting screw which fits into the slot on the points. The adjusting screw should be left in place when removing the old points. It has an irregular shaped head and is furthest away from the crankshaft. Pictures etc. can be found here <http://outboard-boat-motor-repair.com/Evinrude%203%20HP%20Lightwin%20Outboard%20Boat%20Motor/Evinrude%20Johnson%203%20HP%201952-1967%20Tune-Up%20Procedure.htm> What's ommited is where to put the oiling pad that came with your points. That white felt pad fits into a clip that sits on top of the screw hole where the Philips screw that holds the coil goes. The pad fits in that clip and is bent (left) towards the cam and lubricates the cam. For some reason nobody mentions that clip and felt pad. Cheers

I find it easiest to assemble the two pieces with the spring in it's proper place before mounting on the post. It's a little dicey holding it together while pushing the assembly down over the post, but if you put the 1st part on (over the post) then it's almost impossible to get the second part in place with the spring tensed as it has to be. You have to almost lift the first piece up off the post to get the spring in place. With a little practice it comes easier.

Well, I've done thousands of them, and here is how I do it.

First install the base part and go ahead and screw it down. Make sure the thin washer is under the screw head.

Now, barely start the rocker part onto the post and at the same time use a screwdriver to push the spring back behind the upright bar. Then continue to push the rocker down into place. Use your needle nose pliers to slide the bronze U-clip over the spring and upright bar. Notice the dimple in the clip mates up with the hole in the upright bar. Now start sliding the circlip into the groove on the pivot post, and push it into place with a screwdriver. Connect the wires and you are ready to adjust the gap---another topic.

When you connect those wires, make sure they are properly tucked away so they don't rub on anything. And do not have the condenser wire pointing up to rub on the flywheel.

It actually is pretty simple. Especially after the first dozen or so.

FR is exactly correct, per usual.. and nicely detailed! I'd only add that if you're filing up and re-using the points that were in there, check 'em for continuity before you connect the wires. Use a multimeter across each pointset when closed to ensure you have a good, clean connection. I snap 'em open and closed a couple times and recheck to be sure. If that's good, hook up the wires and gap to .020". I then put the flywheel on and tighten wrench tight, hook up the spark tester and wrap a rope around the flywheel to check spark (plugs removed). If I'm getting 1/4" blue bolt on both, I torque the flywheel nut to spec, hook up the .030" gapped plugs and call it done.
Good luck!

THANKS GUYS!!!

I set the base piece down, and slightly tightend the screw. Then I took a pair of micr-needlenose to hold the spring back and slid it in...

got the wires connected, flywheel on. This afternoon we go to the tank...

Did you torque your flywheel nut?
With a torque wrench?
Don't fiire it until you do.
