Re: 2 problems

I checked the filter and it had minimal stuff on it, I blew it out and cleaned it off any way, as far as the PCV valve goes, there isn't one on it, there is a hose that goes from the top of the rocker cover to the filter. I'll wait for others to respond. Let me know if you have any other suggestions. Chris

If you are getting a black sooty buildup, I would be checking the belts.. If they are the wrong belts or tightened improperly you can get that black rubber deposited everywhere in the engine compartment.

What you found for ventilation is correct - no PCV valves on marine engines. The belt suggestion is also a good one and probably what the black residue is. If it was me, I'd replace the riser gaskets for sure, and then run it up to operating temp watching closely (gauges, belts, engine, oil) as it got there. Then I'd shut it down, check the oil again, and check the compression myself. I suppose you could pressure test the cooling system before you started all this if you really think there's a problem...

What imported TheMan said, it's the belts. Mine were loose once and the soot was all over and clogged up the arrestor. Tighetened them up but the soot returned, the belts were getting worn and started to stretch to where they couldn't be tightened anymore. Put on new belts and don't forget to blow the soot out of the arrestor!

The belt looks to be new and really pretty tight, not sure if the problem was from old belts prior to me. I checked out the arrestor yesterday and it looke fairly clean, I blew it out any way.

Maybe you should just clean it all up. The black soot, the best you can and run the boat in the lake and see if the black soot comes back before you go tearing anything down. I was always taught if it Ain't broke don't fix it. Run the boat ten min. Shut it down and check it. If no soot appears run it an hour and check it. Just keep an eye on it a couple times out. If the soot comes back. There is a problem. Again if it Ain't broke don't fix it

Ok- Belts look good- I ran the engine for a 15-20 min, it idles some what smooth at 1000 rpm no problems with over heating oil pressure was at 50. I stopped the motor and let the oil drain back into the pan, checked it and it look good and clean, open the oil fill and noticed the white milky oil on the valve springs and keepers, Why there and not in the crankcase oil? Also while running it sounded like it was mis firing, smooth running then sounds like a miss, its not always though. Let me know what you think.
